Im going to be doing the NFA gun trust, finally, and hopefully after that send in my form 1's to SBR my mr556 and UMP. Ive looked and searched and i just want to know what is the most you can cut the 16" barrel down to without have to modify the gas port and gas block? From what i read people were able to re-profile it down to 12" and 11.5" without any problems functioning. Do you guys know of any issues of the barrel being the short without modifying the gas block?

After a typically exhaustive five-year process, the Army may be ready to issue a new rifle to infantrymen for the first time in 50 years. Through what’s called the individual carbine competition, the Army is evaluating five rifles for widespread service as a replacement for the M4. The final product of that selection process will likely mean the end of the M16 family of weapons’ streak as the longest-running standard US infantry rifle.

Of the five rifles submitted to the Army as a replacement for the M4/M16, the Heckler & Koch HK416 is a strong candidate, though many think not likely the end winner. In its own right, the HK416 is amassing a strong reputation in the US military. At the top of its resume is that it’s credited with delivering the rounds that killed Osama bin Laden. Next on the list is that the Marine Corps adopted it as the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle to replace—not fully, but in large part—the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, which has been in service with the Marines since 1985.

“Early on, the 416 got an almost mythical reputation,” says Larry Vickers, who spent 20 years with the Army’s Delta Force and was instrumental in putting the 416 into the hands of the special operations community. “As far as a CQB gas-piston weapon, it’s about as good as you can get. Very reliable.”

Guys, I could use some actual experience and knowledge, please help.

I acquired a MR762 a week ago at the reasonable price. While the rifle is still NIB, I am already thinking about selling it for MR556, and later clone into IAR. (The truth is I thought IAR uses 7.62mm round, lol)

Also, I consider 5.56mm bullets are cheaper to shoot, and recoil is more manageable. (I've never shot a 762mm on an AR platform before)

Then a bunch LGS people tried to talk me out of selling MR762, but none of them gave me a specific reason to keep it.

I was planning to get a M14-EBR and MR556 in the following year, and I have always believed .308 should be used on traditional snipe rifle, not on AR platform.

What I would like to know is, "is MR762 truly worth to keep it"? Why is it better to shoot?

Sorry for the newbie question, since I do not have the experience in AR .308.

Thanks!

MR223 BD at the dealer (I need some clarifications)

So my dealer has received my MR223 16.5". Unfortunatly i can't pick it up yet cause i'm waiting for my acquisition permit (switzerland). Hopefully it should be here next week. So I was not able to see it for myself but I asked my dealer about a few details on it because i'm still confused about the difference between the MR223 and the MR223A1.

I was on the phone with him so I didn't want to swamp him with questions so I just asked what I thought would be the essentials.

First of all it is a BD date code. Second it is marked MR223 and not MR223A1. Third I asked him to put the upper on a standard Ar15 lower which he nicely accepted to do while I was on the phone with him. He said it fits like a glove. By that time I also wanted to ask him if the stock had the locking screw but I felt it was time to let the man get back to his work so I didn't ask and I didn'nt want to be obnoxious...

So now I would like to know what features are different from the early models of MR223? What is it that I don't have comparded to a MR223A1? I thought the ar15 pin location was a MR223A1 thing. I also thought that the rifle being marked BD (2013) should have been marked MR223A1 (being a fresh production).

I have been on several threads pertaining to the differences but I have to say this is all a little confusing, so if anyone with straight forward information on the rifle I received (mainly, am I going to be missing features that are only on A1 marked mr223).

I am asking all this because as long as I don't receive my permit and go pick it up I would have the chance to tell my guy that that is not the one I want and look for a MR223A1 instead (but that would complicate things as I would have to import it from Germany. Time consuming but ultimately doable if its REALLY worth it).

Any confirmed and knowledgeable input would be greatly appreciated.

P.S: It is my understanding that I can drop in a Timney ar 15 Skeletonized trigger in it. Am I correct?

I also have in my drawer a Geissele Super Dynamic combat trigger. Can I drop this in it with some modification to the trigger (not the receiver or bcg)?

Thank you

As a collector I am appreciative of all types of firearms and makes. So it is in the spirit that I ordered an AR-15 as I do not have one in my collection. I figured any serious collector should at least have one. Our choice here is pretty limited when it comes to them but I eyes were set on a German HERA Arms AR-15 16.75" in a tungsten cerakote finish as i think it is a sexy looking gun and from the information I could get they seemed like a pretty decent quality manufacturer. As nothing pretty ever comes easy, I had to order one from Germany with all the hassle that comes with it (I am right next door but Switzerland is not in the EU so it makes things more complicated) but I have to give props to my dealer as he always makes things happen for me. So after a long wait, buying a Nightforce 2.5-10 with larue mount, raptor charging handle, PWS comp and all sorts of other mall ninja gizmos, the rifle finally got here. I took it to the range as fast as I could and low and behold, Short stroking and double feeds on about every round.Tried different mags, different ammo to no avail... Back to the smith he has been going over it for over 3 weeks and still the b%&*h would just not cooperate!

Today I went back there and told him that I was not interested anymore even if I had to take a hit (the rifle is under warranty but we would have to export it again to Germany and that is also a pain). Mind you he does not carry them, that was a special order for yours truly. Like a real gentleman, he told me not to worry about it and that I could have a full refund and that he would sort out that mess, to which I replied keep the money with you and please order me a 16,5" MR223 please as I now need something that works, something that is quality, something that I know I love. I already own a MR308 and that rifle is my favorite rifle ever and lord knows if i have tried a few...

So there it is I would never consider buying a DI gun again, and I can't wait for the MR223 to come. Piston all the way (which i should've known from owning a sig 553).

I would be lying if I said HKpro had nothing to do with that and even though it's going to cost me more, I think it will be worth every penny!

So thank you guys for the amazing forum. And to those who hate on HK, I say it's your loss...
In my safe you can find Beretta, Sig, S&W, Ruger, STI, Colt, Remington, Taurus, and a few other not worth mentioning. But I have to say HK is what makes my heart skip a beat! So I always made it a point not to be a fanboy but now, and part because of the forum, I think I'm getting there...

I will post pictures as soon as I get it for sure.

P.S: I hope this is under the right forum and if not please free to move it. I just want to tell the world that this is the AR style rifle to buy!

Not finished, but almost. Needs some final polish, glass blasting and coating. Cut down to 368mm (14.5"), turned down to 21mm (0.830") and (0.710"). Target 11dgr crown. 0.500"x28tpi muzzle thread.

Interesting part is, that barrel might be carbon nitrided from factory. Hints are very hard barrel exterior, that freshly sharpened bit had hard time to cut and black tint on barrel bore. To confirm that we will later test surface hardness of barrel (under gas block) and barrel bore hardness (piece left from cutting barrel). Cutting left over will go to science facility that does material and precision mechanics research. This facility will do also carbon nitriding, if barrel was not nitrided originally. If barrel was nitrided I probably will just do Cerakote on barrel exterior.

Next stage is modified gas block, with competition style adjustable system.

All the pictures I've seen look like a slightly darker burnt bronze but its difficult to tell from pics. Does anyone who was at shot show have some insights to the proper color?

Just got in my mr556 and I'm trying to make the decision now if I want to nitride the barrel of not. It's primary use is going to be for carbine classes (I do 8-12 a year) at round counts of 3k or so each course. All the reports and threads I've read are leading me to think its a good idea but I wanted to get everyone's opinion. What is the expected barrel life of s stock mr556 barrel?

Thank You
