The newer style (the ones that curve out) don't look like it, but shoulder more comfortably. The difference is the rubber pad.
I personally don't like either of them much. I don't like the way they look, and there are only two positions: Extended and collapsed.
I totally agree, the m-4 stock is way more versatile and with a rubber slip on butt pad; there is minimal recoil.
