Default Clone Bolt Head Fit Issues (Help Needed)

I have been having problems with a CA89-40 that I bought several years ago. I kept it as kind of a collection piece and rarely shot it until now. I already changed the lower to HK from Adam and sold my Coharie parts on Gunbroker so I am on my own as far as warranty issues go. I have been getting failures to eject or stove pipes every few rounds.

The bolt head also manages to ride over the ejector lever sometimes. I think the bolt head is way out of spec. I have a MP5K clone that runs flawlessly and it has no slop in the way the bolt head engages the locking piece. The MP5/40 clone bolt head feels like a loose tooth with a LOT of vertical play. Could this be why it can't eject and why it rides high and locks the gun up? I figured that if the bolt head fits improperly then it will be in a different spot every time and reliable function goes out the window.

Another crappy issue that happened was that a genuine HK mag got the left lip sheared off by a spent casing that the bolt pushed into the plastic. (Like a small knife) Damn. I have never seen that happen. I am not a fan of plastic mags now...

I don't have another MP5/40 type gun to compare it to. Any help would be appreciated. I have already looked online for a replacement. HK = $500, Black Market Parts = $99. RCM doesn't have a .40 bolt head listed on their site, but they have carriers for the .40.

    Thanks.

Well HK is making all the new ones only available to LE or Military so maybe you should get one of theirs while it's still available.

You may wish to do a review of I believe by (Oregon shooter) He showed the issues with his bolt head concerning spec's. It was done pretty well with pictures and colored highlights of the bolt head issue.

Additionally he also had issues with the trigger pack which I think you have corrected.

Also check when installing the grip to see if it is riding to low- UN/level- high This has been the culprit with the welded shelf being the item to correct.

    Hope this helps?

Way to go... not. Well, I guess you're porked as far as any help from SW/Coharie.

All I could suggest at this point is to either buy a 40 kit from SW for spare parts, or start swapping out stuff for HK parts. You're stuck in the "throw parts at it until it works" rut.

Ejection/extraction issues rest with extractor, extractor springs, ejectors, ejector springs, even bolt heads and locking pieces.

You MIGHT try calling SW's welder guy, Mike Turner.( 480-276-8443 TurnFab82@yahoo.com). He's assembling the 40 kits for customers who buy the kits and might not object to foreign (not Coharie/SW parts) being in the gun. From what I've heard so far, he's doing a good job assembling these kits into functioning guns.

At this point I see no reason not to at least drop a dime and check with the guy.

Dam beat me to the punch and with great information added as to who can assist you.

Turner Fabrications should be able to help, use the search function so that you can judge for your self about his work. As you will see it's pretty good.

Yeah... I know I messed up by selling my Coharie parts.

I just called a friend of mine to see if he will let me borrow his complete HK MP5/40 bolt group. It might cost me some beer, but it will be worth it. If that solves the problem then I will be off to hkparts to spend some serious money.

If the parts swap doesn't work I will call Turner Fabrications and see if I can send it to him for a check up. At this point I will pay almost any price to get this thing running right.

    Thanks guys.

Or better yet, just buy replacement Coharie parts off Gunbroker. People are always selling those babies.

Then put them back on the gun and send it to Coharie for warranty work. Problem solved.

After you get it working, and make sure it works with the HK parts, sell those Coharie parts again... yeeeehaaawwww.
