    Default New G3 clone owner

I recently purchased an H&K G3 clone. Custom built by Ghille Bear on a German G3 kit. Very early PTR91 receiver (stamped in Germany at H&K Oberndorff then assembled here by JLD), trunion replaced with HK factory trunion, refinished to like new condition. Pristine bore & only 150 rounds fired through it according to previous owner. 18 magazines, sealed SA battle pack plus a SEF original G3 metal lower.

Jeff was incredibly helpful to confirm that in did was one of his builds plus answer any questions that I might have about these guns. You don't find people like that anymore. Thank you Jeff.

Went to shoot it yesterday for the 1st time. It shoots great & it likes to destroy brass (good thing I don't reload). Tears the neck of the casing plus a ding in the middle of each.

I found it that I was shooting low & a bit to the left at 100 yds. w/ the rear sight set on 2. It got better on setting 3 but I was still shooting to the left. I have to adjust windage to compensate. I was also thinking in getting either a red dot or a 2x scope on it. It seems that the A.R.M.S. Mount is highly recomended for it?

I like the way the HK collapsible stock looks but everywhere I read complains about how uncomfortable it is. How about the Choate side folding stock? It looks like it won't be as bad.

I went to buy a set of generic automotive feeler gauges today so I can check the headspace. I just have to find the procedure to do it.

I'd like to also swap some of the green furniture for black. I found a black plastic lower under the following description:

"This is a New/Old Stock German G3 Original Navy (SEF) Full Auto Lower Housing and Fire Control (FC) Selector/Safety in exceptional new condition. Also, the housing handle comes with a New Hogue HandAll Grip Sleeve installed that provides extra comfort and support with its recoil absorbing durable rubber material. Additionally, the old stock FC Trigger Pack that was removed from a used surplus de-mil rifle is in excellent condition.."

How much do these usually run?

    Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't go paying too much for that trigger housing. You can get complete packs for $75 some places. I think 20 is the most I would pay for one myself, unless it was already clipped and pinned or something spectacular. I have never seen a sidefolder on a G3. Might look a little funny. I have seen some stocks that curve like the MP5 A3 tele stock does to fit on the shoulder better than the old style G3 tele stock did. Have you thought about that?

Congrats on the new gun btw! Lets see a photo

Congrats on the purchase. The Choate's aren't bad, but I agree they look sort of funny. It's really a matter of personal taste.
If you search here there are some posts about checking bolt gap. if you pm me an e-mail address, i will send you a PDF of the 91 manual, which can also be found for free online if you are adventurous.

Thank you. That housing has not been clipped & pinned & I won't get it unless he's willing to sell it for a good price. I did see pictures of the concave stock you're refering to but they're hard to come by for what I've been reading. Here are pictures of sidefolder on a G3: http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/new_page_16.htm

I was going to post a picture but this site doesn't allow you to do it unless you load them to a website 1st. I'll get to that soon.

Flying cow of death, I found a copy of the manual on ARF.com, thank you for the offer anyway.

There really isnt any good solid scope mounts for these rifles, except the original HK claw mount[ringed or stanag. DS arms sells a B&T scope mount that can mount red dot and long tube scopes. The fero-z hendsolt stays zeroed perfect and fits nice and tight on my PTR91kfm-4. Stay with the A-2 fixed and keep the retractable for re-sale or original look. I use mine on my ghillie build and it doesnt recoil as bad as everyone say,s it does. CTR magpul works great on the m-4 tube[commercial size] on my K. I swap the A-2 and A-3 back and forth on the GHILLIE G-3. Enjoy bro. Make sure you zero the rifle on the 2 peep at 30 meters first, than you should be 3 1/2 " high at 100 yrds, and dead on at 200yrds. sounds like you have to dial the diopter up a turn or two. I,d love to see this HK marked PTR rec.? NOT to sure I,d beleive that one.

Thanks for the clarification ghilliebear, I was just repeating what the previous owner had told me. As for sight tool, it looks like needle noe pliers & a crewdriver will accomplish the same correct? http://www.mg-42.net/sight_adj.htm

tcr thanks for the iron 30 meter zero reminder. Gotta get off the hensolt for a while.

For the iron sight adjustment, a pair of $10 tiny "round" nose pliers wife purchased at a craft store, in the bead and jewelery section.

Check out Andrew's "Heads Up" and watch list for parts, prices and web sites. Tons of cheap parts, do your home work. That lower can be found for $59.95 and furniture for $19.95.

Thank you all for the great feedback so far. So it seems that not that many people (here) use the side folder & the collapsible is not one to keep as your only one due to how uncomfortable it can be (it is the best looking one though).
