It's normal for the cases to be dinged, but if you shot the same ammo the ejection pattern should be similar. 20rds is not a large sample though. Keep an eye on your bolt gap.
I bought a new PTR-91 GI from Atlantic Arms. This would be my first HK-91 style weapon and I'd like to get little info from the experts before I start using the gun heavily.
I shot 20 rounds through it yesterday. Most rounds ejected about 20-30 feet, but about 5 out of the twenty empty casings only went about 6 feet and had a dent in the neck of casing. I was using Remington express Core Lokt ammunition. Is it normal for a PTR-91 to dent casings or should I be worried?I've never had a gun do something like that before.
As this is my first HK-91 style weapon, I would also like to know if there is anything I need to watch-out for or if there is any special care that the gun requires. I assume that normal care and maintenance will suffice, but I wanted to ask someone with more experience with these types of guns just to be sure.
PS. Any advice on getting a new handguard for a PTR 91 GI. The factory one is fairly loose.

Handguards are never tight unless the assembler of the gun frakked up. Some motion in the handguard is not a concern.

I checked the bolt gap today. The lowest gauge I had was a .012" and I couldn't get it to fit. I even tried to force it in and it wouldn't fit.
Young Gun Thank You for your order and we hope you enjoy the rifle the PTR GI is the most popular PTR rifle we offer and have have had good feedback on them.

AtlanticFirearms, I had a very positive experience with you guys, and I wouldn't hesitate to order something from you again.
A little update. I cleaned and oiled the gun today and fired 40 more rounds, all of which ejected 20 to 30 feet. So it seems a nice cleaning fixed the ejection issues. I'm still concerned about the bolt gap though. I going to pick up a smaller set of feeler gauges monday so I can get the exact measure of the gap. PTR states that a new rifle should have a bolt gap around .014"-.019". It worries me that mine is below .012" and I've only shot 60 rounds. Should I call PTR on Monday, or am I being paranoid?
I have a ptr kpf my bolt gap from the factory is 0.11. I have close to 200 rounds through it and it has not changed. I am not really concerned with it right now. I am waiting for my paper work back so I can shorten the barrel. I am planning on getting a German carrier and bolt. I will adjust the rollers then after I make the changes. Great gun has shot everything I have put in it. Autozone has a great set of feeler gauges. 26 blade in both standard and metric. Paid 6 dollars for the set.
0.011 is the gap. Forgot the extra zero.
Young Gun if you are worried it does not hurt to call PTR and see what they have to say both Atlantic Firearms & PTR are not going anywhere and will help out of there is a legitimate issue !
