Default Asian Contract MP5 Magazine Range Report... Sorta

Some of you who have been keeping track will remember that I mentioned a few times that I bought 25 of these mags from Gordon Miller (hkspecialist.net) and hadn't tried them yet in my Coharie guns. Well last night I loaded up 6 of them and headed off to the range. I was using 115 grn. S&B FMJ ammo. Well the Fleming sear pack was already in the CA89K so I started with it. They worked pretty well. I went through four of the mags and the only problem that I had was the last round in two of them. It didn't eject, but fell out when I cleared the gun to load the next mag.

    The sequence was:

Mag 1, standard config: Worked flawlessly
Mag 2, standard config: Worked fine but last rnd. didn't eject
Mag 3, standard config: Worked fine but last rnd. didn't eject
Mag 4, enhanced with Wolff spring: Worked flawlessly
Mag 5, HK LEO curved mag: Worked flawlessly

I then moved the sear pack over to the CA89 (full size MP5 clone) and shot three of the Asian contract mags through it. All ran flawlessly.

Now I need to point out here a very key point of information. Upon receiving the mags, I found 5-6 of them that wouldn't operate smoothly. I corrected this problem by dis-assembling the mag and lining up the spring with the follower correctly. Not sure how they put them in there but that made all the difference in the world.

I apologize for not doing more extensive testing but this was just a short little shoot that I decided to do and see if they were going to work well or not at all.

Preliminary/initial conclusions: The mags seem to be built well but don't operate quite as smoothly as the HK factory mags when compressing them (moving the follower down and up). They don't have the little punched metal tab in the follower that retains the spring. Not sure if that's required but don't know why they didn't do it. I think the mags work well in general but might need the 10% increased power springs from Wolff to function more reliably.

    More testing to follow.

Here's a picture from the underside of the followers. You can just barely see the little tab on the HK follower on the right. That's the one that the front part of the spring pushes against or hooks under, depending on how you put it back together. ;)

And here they are while on the spring. The bottom one is the HK follower and spring. The top one (Asian type) is facing the other direction but there's no tab to see so it doesn't matter.

    Stock No. 85263

    That's a 10-pack for $55.99 so just $5.60/spring... essentially.

Oh and Wolff has too "f"s at the end.

There are other subtle differences in the followers and I just noticed that the back and front sides (where the punched tab is) has the edges rolled a bit on the HK design and is cut off nearly flat on the Asian mags. That might contribute to the smoother action of the HK follower.

You can see it best in this picture:

No. The Asian mags are the ones that have less material. So don't plan on cutting anything off.

No cutting, just roll the edges a little bit?

I too bough 25 of the Korean mags and have speant two evening cleaning them. One night to clean the external surfaces while watching movie and last night to do all the internals and tests of 13 of them, again while watching a movie. I am taking the new CA94 to the range tonight and will give a range report on both the mags and the rifle when I get back in.

Thanks for the info on the comparison between them and the HK factory mags.
