A quahtah of an inch? You sure its even got a shelf in there? That's a bit much. I've seen 1/32, I've heard of 1/16 and 1/8th... but 1/4?
Is it like... hanging off the gun?
I have about 1/4" vertical play at the front of my lower. Would a new c&p lower fix the prob or do the same thing. is there any way to fix it? I havent seen that it affects the functioning of the weapon its just annoying as hell that when you take up a firing grip on the weapon you feel that slippage....

well maybe not 1/4" but sure as hell feels like it. it's not just a little wiggle though is what im getting at. could it be the shelf put in wrong? that would be a pain to fix huh?
When you're asking for help, you need to be very specific as the actual precise measurements could indicate which problem that you have.
You can easily "shim" the shelf. some have don't this with thin aluminum. Making it tighter will usually make it feel better but you have to make sure that you're not raising the trigger group too high.
Sure it could have been put in wrong. It's usually not a problem in a semi gun, more of a "IT JUST DON'T WORK" thing in a full auto.
DO you have one of those pistol gripped woodworkers clamps? Something that will open up at least 8 inches or so? Clamp it top of receiver to the area right in front of the trigger guard. Shoot it. Disregard all the laughter. Screw them. See if it works better when you have the upper and the lower pulled together with that clamp.
If it does, you're a candidate for a welded in shim. There were a lot of clone guns with shelf issues, CA isn't the only one.
As long as the trigger pack is sitting in the lower with nothing under it, (as in flat, level) you really can't have an issue with the trigger pack parts going too high.
When we did my 51k, the original shelf was way low. We cut it off, made a new shelf like the Gordon Miller shelf, modified it for the paddle release, and welded it in. It was a mite too high now, couldn't even assemble the lower to the gun. Some judicial filing and all was well... IT WAS TIGHT. Right up there. Gun functioned with no problems, but I had him take some more off. It was a pain to assemble.
Now, it's nice. No noticeable movement, and assembles well. Ask anyone who has shot it how it shoots... all you get is a big dumb grin (and sometimes they get a little wild-eyed).
