Default Federal Arms 91 (FA91) - How does it compare to a PTR 91?

I'm looking at picking up a FA91 off of a friend.

It's in very good condition, and would run me $550-600 saving me around $300-350 compared to a PTR91.

The price difference is huge and would be great (leaves me a good amt. of $ for ammo/mags) but I don't want a piece of junk that isn't reliable/breaks etc.

So what do you guys think?

If it's the one with the thick aluminum receiver I'd pass. It won't take an A3 stock. You might want to do a search on google and in the hkpro archives for other issues.

Sorry, but I have to agree with the others. In the HK world what you would pay for a PTR will make a hell of a difference to you down the line. You'll be much happier with the PTR and get a much better price for it in case you decide to off it for some reason. You friend, by the way isn't going to be too happy to hear this either. My money is betting he wants to sell it as bad as you want to get your hands on a 91 clone. It's true you won't have as much $$ to spend on ammo after this, but you'll be thanking us down the line sometime.

Trust me, you eventually WON'T be happy with this purchase. Hope you and yer bud are still friends after this... but you asked us.

Yeah, it is. It's the FIRST commercial clone that was available after HK stopped importing their guns. Good idea, very poor execution. Even the cast stainless steel guns from SW were VASTLY superior to the F.A. guns, and not all that bad looking, by da way.

There will be those that agree and those that don't but I think for firearms, price can equal quality, assuming its not because of external reasons (politics, misinformed dealers/sellers).

If you want a HK 91 type gun you go with the ones made by the following companies. (Not in particular order).

SAR 3/8 (The ones made in Greece, not the aluminum D.C ones)
    FMP
    INDEP
PTR (Cheapest of the 4 in a good way, the other 3 are very sought after.)

The other board members are right though, in the long run you'll be far happier with a PTR or any of the above even though they cost more. You'll also have a lot easier time selling back the above mentioned clones. If you look at it this way, you'll be buying a gun that may require a lot more work down the road and when all is said and done you'll probably have spent equal or more than the cost of a PTR.

Magazines for HK91's and its clones are common and cheap, for now anyway, but you can find good deals all around on gunbroker, this forum like CzechBoss's mag deal, or surplus shops like cheaperthandirt.com

lol my other post was a few mins to late to help persuade you to the direction you already chose.

Czechboss has a clone up for sale for a good price if you need one right away.
