Wow, I use that ammo in my AK but its a cheap $200 special that i take and beat the life out of. Its good for coyotes and rabbits.

Do you have the casing that did this????
If you have the casing it will be A LOT easier to determine the exact cause.
Could be Double charged load, Case head failure, Out of battery discharge, Case head failure due to an unsupported chamber/feed ramp area (I know the USP 45s chamber is not as supported as a USP40 or 9), or some other accident.

I don't see what the cases being steel could have caused the problem either. If it were a double loaded case, I doubt a brass case would have saved it.

Does H&K state that steel cases void the warranty? I don't remember seeing that in my manuals (but I may just not remember it).

Its not the steel case ammo H&K dont like, its that its not SAAMI Spec ammo with sub standard quality control.
Plus, its not up to H&K to replace guns, caused by out of spec ammo, its the maker of the ammo who is liable!!

(Looks like a double charge caused the catastrophic failure)
The shooter spent all his money on an expensive HK45, and could not afford high quality ammo through it?

Sounds like he is living past his means.

Sure hope the shooter's hands are okay!

O.k. I thought some of you were saying the steel cased ammo would void the warranty. I've shot tons of Wolf steel cased ammo thorough a Sig 220 and USP compact with zero problems.

Contact H&K to see if the Lifetime Warranty covers the USP in a Catastrophic Failure using Wolf steel case ammo, they know the answer, HK Pro forum members cant answer that question. :)

Its the ammo maker who is liable for faulty ammo, NOT the firearms maker.

So what brand of "cheap wally world ammo" is so inferior that you refuse to sell it in your store? Blazer, Winchester, Remington? Do tell. They don't sell any steel case, or Russian ammo at WM. Or is it just that they beat you on price on a like for like box of ammo that makes you mad. I making a very good living, but I also have a wife, kids and a life outside of guns so yes, if I can buy a 100 round box of 9mm 115 grain ball Winchester white box at WM I will do it for $21 vs. $30 for the same amount of ammo, but a lesser brand (Blazer aluminum) from the gun store I will. I buy a lot of guns from my local gun store (which is huge), but the owner is so cheap he used to sell the brochures that manufacturers gave him for free. He charges over MSRP on many items in his store. He charges a 5% to use a credit card on a gun. He would have pay toilets if he thought he could get away with it. I am a capatilist to the bone, which means I spend my money wisely or I "vote with my dollars" to use the old economics phrase. We are all in business to make money and everyone has the opportunity to make money, but you need to earn the profit by supplying a good value. You choose where to set your prices and the consumer decides if he wants to buy from you, both parties choose. I know Wal-mart has purchasing power that few comapnies do, but I'll bet your mark-up on ammo is higher than WMs. I will spend my money on the best ammo at the lowest prices so I can do more shooting for the same amount of money. Besides, the gun store guy gets $20 an hour for his range which I frequently shoot at.

As for the orginal issue, it is clearly the manufacturers (or their agent's) responsibilty, not HKs and I'll bet they make it right or they won't be in business long. It was the the case material that caused the failure.

So what sort of ammo are all you guys shooting while sitting on your soap-boxes? Because when I go to the range, I'm shooting around or more than 200 rounds each session. Tell me your shooting high quality Federal, Hornady or Speer ammo at 200 rounds+ per range session(2-3 range sessions a month) and I want to put in a job application where you work!!!

I'm wary of the Russian stuff myself. Federal AE is usually what I shoot for practice, but I'm thinking about getting some Sellier & Bellot. So, I guess my question is how can we find out which ammunition does not meet the specs mentioned? I'd be interested to find out how much practice-grade ammunition is not within specs.......

    Thanks,
    Tyler
