To them, their firearm is an issued tool, and something they would NEVER dream of spending their own money on.

And that is the problem with your hypothesis; the agencies do not buy these smaller back-up type pistols for issue; those individuals who have them paid for them individually.

And if it doesn't have the potential for a government contract, HK isn't interested.

Which is why I'm willing to wager we'll never see this conversion marketed here- at least, not by HK. I would DEARLY love to be proven wrong... but I'm for damn sure not holding my breath.

You are certainly correct about most cops (in my experience) not being 'gun people', but even so, I'd say just short of 50% of the cops I know carry a backup.

    Good point.

Regardless of whether not H&K only caters to LEO/Military, they are missing out on market share for not giving us civies what we want! They know damn well that their products have a cult-like following. Their phone lines are tied up all day because of civilians like me who like to order springs for their H&Ks, ask questions about pistol release dates, etc.

Hell, I'd be willing to bet that a good chunk of their sales is from civilians. While there are LE agencies that issue H&Ks, the fact is most of the agencies out there still issue Glocks, M&Ps, etc because they are cheaper. It's the handgun enthusiast or hobbyist that goes out and collects dozens $1000 H&Ks for the hell of it. Cops don't do that. But that's just how H&K does business, and as long as the handguns they do produce continue to be the best, I'm happy enough!

Nearly every cop I work with carries a secondary handgun... however, I think it is kind of a leap to say they carry pocket pistols... None of the guys I work with carry pocket guns. most of us have a compact or sub-compact size handgun... just sayin'
