MADE IN GERMANY EQUALS BETTER, EH??? I have to cry BS. As an 19 year practicing Senior Staff engineer I know that Design and Process FMEAs are de rigeur in.... JAPAN and, in some instances, the USA, not Germany.
While I am attracted to the high end things that emanate from Europe they usually do not have the most reliable products even though they use a lot of high quality materials. I often wonder what the outcome would be if, say, Porsche and Honda collaborated on the next 911: the engineering discipline found in Japan is unrivaled for consumer good engineering.
Examples of Germany's Engineering faux pas: VW, Audi and Daimler-Benz.
The things they do well they truly do well, however. They tend to be more rigorous in academic solutions and processes than here; same with the French and British engineering companies I've worked with. But keep in mind I'm speaking of companies (or departments within them) not nations, per se.
