Boomfab replied that some are marked "HK G3K", and some are marked "G3 K" depending on "when they were manufactured". The serial numbers define when a particular rifle was manufactured, so if there was a way to correlate when they were marked one way vs. when they were marked the other way, we could know which way a particular rifle would have been marked had it been a real G3K.
I know, I know, it's overkill to an extreme degree.

ok ok... all caught up now. would be nice, actually to mark it correctly for the year it was built but hell, by the time we collect enough s/n data THEN find out which ranges were marked which way... i'll be too old to shoot the dam things! Wonder if te good folks over at HK would answer this one?
