Default Need SACO 91 import info

I have an H&K model 91 that was imported by SACO. In reading everything that I can find, SACO imported H&K 91's from Germany in 1974 & 1975 but then H&K USA took over it's own importation in 1976. Did SACO continue to import H&K's in competition with H&K USA??? Or did SACO's importation end then ? Or when did it end? Mine is marked "HK" / 1979 ?
Also the bolt & carrier are both marked "HJ" , where the listing said the "J" was not used except on some parts, so what does that mean.

    Thanks for your help.

SACO/Arlington Imports (information that I currently have)

    1. 1974 (marked "1974")/SN's 0 11 11X-0 11 5XX
    2. 1975 (marked "1975")/SN's @ 01154X
    3. 1976 (marked "1976")/SN's A01240X-A01253X and (marked "HG 1976")/SN's A01253X-A1317X
    4. 1977 to mid/late-1979 (marked "HH", "HI" and "HK")/SN's A01358X-A01891X.

    On the parts

    H= 7
    J= 9 (J substituted for K on parts).

    Hope this helps! :D

    Default "J" Not on Firearms

J is used in the date code on parts but NOT on firearms, it is my understanding that this is so that there wouldn't be any confusion with the German proof mark for repair on a firearm (which has a "J" in it).

Thanks to Tony & Patrick for the information. I guess that makes mine a late 1979, being marked "HK" and serial # A01795x. That puts it about 1,000 from the highest number that you had listed, Tony.

    Mine is marked ---

    right side mag well
    "Made in Germany"
    "excl. for SACO"
    "Arl. Va. 22201"
    "Kal. .308"

    left side mag well
    "HK91 A01795x"
    "HK"

Kinda neat tho' having a "HK" born H&K. I did not realize that SACO was still importing them that late.

Thanks again for the expert info., Wolf Catcher

    WC,

FYI, the lowest "HK" (1979)/HK Arlington SN I have is A01908X, if that helps.
Your markings are correct as well.

    Hi Tony,

You seem very knowledgeable and I thank you for your assistance. But I forgot to ask if what the estimated value should be. It is in excellent condition with bipod, 4 20rd. mags, 1 30rd. mag, trigger shoe (excellent trigger by the way), QD scope claw mount with original 3x9 ART telescope serial # 000991.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Interesting! FYI, I have an original parts, 99%, "HK" date coded, serial A01914X HK91 that has no import marks. (I've posted pics in another thread) Since you have one marked SACO and Tony has one marked Arlington, I'm guessing 1979 might be the transition year for importers. Although I have second hand story that mine was brought over by an airman serving in Germany this may be another possibility why mine was not marked.

Mine came with 4 mags, bipod, case, tools and claw mount. I think I paid $2300 a few years ago. Hope this helps you.

    1. Rifle ($2,000.00-$2,500.00)
    2. Bipod ($100.00-$150.00, presuming factory)
    3. Magazines ($50.00-$100.00)
    4. Claw mount (non-STANAG with 30mm rings/1" inserts- $200.00-$250.00/STANAG- $175.00-$225.00)
    5. Scope (?).

Hope this gives you a general idea of value, WC! :D

    1. Where are the pics located?
    2. 1979 was the transition year from SACO/Arlington to HK/Arlington.
    3. This is probably correct (I am aware of a similar rifle/IA with the same story).

Wasn't 1975 the transition year from SACO to HK?
Or was that for the HK41?
