Default Diameter difference between G3 Heavy Buffer and G3 regular buffer

    Hey Folks,

Looking for the diameter difference between the G3 Heavy Buffer, and a regular G3 buffer. My stock (US MSG-90 Stock) doesn't look like it will fit the Heavy Buffer, so I will need to know how much will need to be milled/sanded out. I can get an endcap that is milled larger, so that's not an issue.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,

    Q
It doesn't matter how many bullets your gun holds, it's shot placement that counts.

A couple years ago a fellow board member, HKRyan, posted pics of his mod which was somewhat like yours. He had a standard A2 stock with the buffer hole too small (slightly) for the heavy buffer. As I recall he used a drill and carefully bored out the hole in small increments until the buffer would slide in. Seems like it would be easy to do- just go slowly and be careful.

The factory metal stock endcap for a heavy buffer has a hole dia. of approx. .930 inches. Matt

    Thank for the info guys.

I disassembled the stock last night and miked out the hole. The hole is about .890 right now, so it will need to be opened up. I did notice that there is a faint outer ring that mikes out at about .930 (15/16s?). I don't think that it is a sleeve, but rather an impression made when they formed it. It is good though to use as a guide. Now to find the quickest non milling machine technique.

    Any ideas?

    Hey guys,

Here's an update. I talked with my shop guys here, and they recommended an adjustable reamer, with a guide to keep the hole aligned. Will let you know how it goes.

There are sleeves in some stocks that reduce the size to a standard buffer. Did you try pushing the "sleeve" back into the stock? The "sleeve" can not come all of the way out because the stock buttt cap rivets are in the way. I do not know what what others have done to get it out or to keep it from rattling around inside the stock. Matt

It looks like a scribe mark, rather than an actual sleeve. It doesn't have the sleeve mark at the other end. This is for the MSG-90 US made stock.

    Default Update

    Hey folks,

As an update, finally got the Heavy buffer into the US Made MSG-90 Stock. It will fit after reaming the hole, and will try it at the range shortly.

Any reason you didn't use a factory MSG-90 buffer? The 91/G3 heavy buffer is different than the MSG-90 heavy buffer. Assuming the U.S. stock was made to spec, the MSG-90 H-buffer should pop right in.

Couldn't find an MSG-90 buffer. Those are rarer than the Heavy Buffers. Anyway, took the rifle to the range, and you can feel the difference. Takes the normal recoil punch, and turns it into more of a push. Happy with the install.
