I would be interested in both but unfortunately I think I will be priced out on them.
Now I'm just a red blooded American of German/Irish/Scottish descent so call me crazy but I'll take one of each. I'll start with the 417 and pick up the 416 when money allows. Life's too short to deny yourself the simply pleasures of a quality rifle.

I would but the 308 before the .223. My LMT MRP CQB piston is just fine.
I intend on picking up an MR762 as soon as I can find one. I've been obsessing over it a little bit to be honest. Probably the German in me. ;)
The 5.56 version holds a bit more interest for me since it uses non proprietary mags.

I honestly am not knowledgable enough or qualified to give you that kind of evaluation. I have two ar's. One is a colt 6920 and the other the piston LMT. I got it at around two thousand dollars and it was one of the early ones to come out. I have a few hundred rounds through it(no time). All ammo used was PMC ammo. I have never had a failure or any problems like some reported. It runs clean and seems to have less recoil.
All I meant was since I already have a piston .223 I would buy the 7.62 HK first. Nothing against HK except they are always too slow coming to the civilian market.
Alright since I am not the best person to review this(damn newbs) I did a little research and found an excellent comparison of LMT piston to HK 416. It is on www.m4carbine.net. If you complete a search under "LMT piston "the article will come up. The author is SMG Lee who actually knows what he is talking about. Excellent pictures are included. You should check it out
I think this sums it up for a lot of people.
I'm new to HK, with a recent USP45 purchase, but I can't see parting with a huge chunk of money for an AR-type rifle. In February, I finally received the DPMS AR that I ordered in November. For the kind of money that HK will want the DPMS rifle is probably about 99% as accurate and durable. For another $250 I will retrofit it with a gas piston kit, and that will bring it in strong competition to the MR223 coming out this fall.
A DPMS rifle will not come close to matching a HK, LMT, Noveske, or Colt rifle in durability and I can tell you that from watching one of my contracting officers and COTRs have to replace 75 of them after they went down multiple times over three runnings of a 1-week carbine course. Lets not confuse garbage that's good enough for the average plinker with manufacturers (to include Colt, LMT, Noveske, and HK) who actually build a solid product. If HK would get its head out of its collective ass it would realize that at a decent price point it would offer buyers a real alternative to crap like DPMS. I won't even tangle with their LPK's much less a complete DPMS rifle, and there is no retrofit piston system that is going to be as reliable as the proven systems being fielded by H&K, and to a slightly lesser extent LWRC and LMT.
