Default Need Firearms ID Card to Purchase Ammo in NJ as of 4/1/08

I don’t know if you are all aware, but you now need to show your NJ Firearms ID card to buy handgun ammo in NJ as of April 1st , 2008.

The gist of the bill can be found here:

    http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bi...00/2470_S2.PDF

Or you can look up bill A2602 or S2470 from the 2006-2007 year.

    Here the official summary:

    SENATE No. 2470
    with Senate Floor Amendments
    (Proposed By Senator TURNER )
    ADOPTED: JANUARY 3, 2008
Senate Bill 2470 (1R) regulates the sale of handgun ammunition.
Under the provisions of the bill, it is unlawful to sell or transfer
handgun ammunition to another person unless that person is a licensed
manufacturer, wholesaler or dealer, or is the holder of a valid firearms
purchaser identification card, a valid copy of a permit to purchase a
handgun or a valid permit to carry a handgun.
The bill does, however, permit ammunition to be transferred to
individuals who are not licensed or the holders of firearms
identification cards or permits to purchase or carry a handgun for use
in firearms that have been lawfully transferred to that individual for
target practice, trap or skeet shooting or firing range competition or
    instruction.
This Senate amendment clarifies that the provisions of this bill are
not to be construed to prohibit the sale of a de minimis amount of
handgun ammunition at a lawfully operated firing range for immediate
    use at that range.

As used in this act, “handgun ammunition” means ammunition specifically designed to be used only in a handgun.

    i.e. .25Auto, .32ACP, etc...

So this law is useless, as are many others.

Some gun shops have been using this rule for a few months now.

I am not sure if you are implying that it does not apply to ammo for some exotic guns line a .223 handgun, but it applies to all of of the handgun ammo including but not limited to .357, .38, 9mm, .44, .45

But the implementation in many of the stores - they are requiring it for ALL ammo including rifle and shotgun.

Except for online, I've exclusively bought my ammo from Dicks and they always asked to see my FID card. This is going back to October. I didn't even realize it was otherwise.

    Text of law

A FID is only needed for ammunition specifically designed to be used ONLY in a handgun. If you are purchasing ammo for your CX4 carbine in 9mm, you need only to prove your age. You do not need a FID.
