Default PA state ranges: what to expect

a buddy of mine wants me to take his son out to teach him the basics of firearms. sight picture, trigger control, gun safety, stuff like that. i'd rather not go to one of the indoor ranges here in philly so i was thinking of going to one of the PA state ranges. i've never been to any of the state ranges around here and i just want to check to see if this is a good/bad idea.

Well, I went to a local public outdoor range a few days ago to fire my Mosin Nagant. It's pretty.......not that nice. Kinda dilapidated. The distances are set where you put your targets, so if you want to adjust that it's not that great of an idea. Other than that, they aren't too bad. The only problem is you're not immune from the weather. And I live in western PA out by Pittsburgh. Although I doubt that they'd be very different out there.

You might want to try some of the private clubs or commerical clubs. I shoot at Ready Aim Fire in Bristol which is right off I-95, about 5 mintues north of the city line. Another option is the indoor range next to Holmesburg prison. I forget the name, but the guys are nice there. Another option is the range next to the Philadelphia Police Acad. I think it's called the Holmesburg Fish and Game club or something like it.
