First
section from the HK USA website: On
July 31, 1811, his Majesty Friedrich I of Wurttemberg signed a document
establishing a royal weapons factory in the Black Forest village of
Oberndorf, Germany. The factory, employing 133 workers, opened for
business in 1812. |
Detail
on the founders:
Edmund Heckler was born on February 2, 1906, the son of Kilian Heckler and Armalie Schropp. Edmund went to Mauser AG (Aktiengesellschaft--German for "corporation.") in Oberndorf as an apprentice to help earn money for the family. In 1925 he attended the "Maschinenbau Schule" (mechanical engineering school) in Esslingen, Germany. In 1936 he went to work at "Hugo Schneider AG" (HASAG), later he works as a "Oberingenieur" (senior engineer). In 1945, he returned to Oberndorf. Theodor Koch was born on May 13, 1905 in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Germany. He learned Feinmechaniker (precision mechanics) from 1921 to 1924, and studied Maschinenbau (mechanical engineering) from 1925 to 1929, in Esslingen, where he met Edmund Heckler. Koch worked at Mauser AG/Oberndorf as an engineer until September, 1931.
Alexius Wilhelm
Seidel was born July 4, 1909, the son of
Paul Seidel and Josephine Bantle. He lived in a "Werkswohnung"
(apartment on the factory grounds) at the Mauser AG, where his father was the "Obermeister."
Seidel apprenticed at
the Mauser AG as a mechaniker (mechanic). He
was a "Geselle" (an associate) at Mauser from 1927 to 1928. He attended
school in Esslingen, and in 1932 returned to Mauser as engineer.
He worked in the "Entwicklungs- und Konstruktionsabteilung."
(Development and design department.) Seidel developed the
Mauser HSc Pistol, precursor to HK's first ever handgun, the HK4.
Interesting notes about the young company Heckler & Koch:
The "Ingenieurbüro
Heckler" (Engineering office) was founded 1948, Hauptstrasse No. 8 in Oberndorf.
- Their first production
location was in an old fire service store-room. Alex Seidel joined
the team in 1949.
- They incorporated at the "Handelsregister"
28 december 1949 as "Heckler & Koch GmbH"
- They manufactured parts
for sewing-machines
- Their first employee was
Konstantin Wöhrstein
- In 1950, they rented
some old barracks at the Lindenhof (these barracks was from the RAD =
Reichsarbeitsdienstes)
- The people from
Oberndorf called the place the " Vereinigte Hüttenwerke"
(Combined Metallurgical plant.)
- By October 1950, HK had
140 employees.
