The Numbering System

The Numbering System

HK has for many years used a numbering system to name their firearms.  Lately, this numbering system appears to have been abandoned.   However, it does provide insight into what HK used for many years and sheds light on the method for that system.  The system is not consistent and is not used for all HK models.

FIRST NUMBERTYPE OF WEAPONSECOND NUMBERCALIBER
1BOX FED MACHINE GUN17.62 X 51
2BELT FED MACHINE GUN27.62 X 39
3SELECT FIRE ASSAULT RIFLE35.56 X 45
4PARAMILITARY RIFLE (GERMAN)49 X 19
5SUBMACHINE GUN5(NOT USED)
6GRENADE LAUNCHER(COMP. WEAPON)64.6 X 36
7GRENADE LAUNCHER (ADD-ON WEAPON)7(NOT USED)
8(NOT USED)8(NOT USED)
9SEMI-AUTOMATIC PARAMILITARY RIFLE (USA)940MM
For example, the HK91 is found by adding the 9 from the first column with the 1 from the second column to determine model designation.  The HK53, 21, 23, 69, 79 among others are numbered this way.  The P11 pistol is not.  The G11 is not.  As you can see, inconsistent, but quite simple!
