The Marines are from my old unit, Marine Barracks 8th and I. They are part of the guard force and are actually Security Force trained Marines. They provide security for the Barracks, the brass that lives there and the Navy brass that live just three blocks down the street at the Navy Yard.
When I was there, they went through the sad experience of having to turn in their MP5-Ns for M4s.

    And from Fox News:

"The board that oversees the U.S. Capitol Police has opened an investigation into whether a tactical team of officers that was one of the first on the scene during the Washington Navy Yard shooting was ordered to stand down.
    ".....

"They reportedly arrived near the scene within minutes of the report of an active shooter going out and were armed with HK-416 assault weapons. "
