Default HK G3 use by French Foreign Legion?

I was looking through an old book of mine (Modern Land Combat by David Miller and Christopher Foss - Portland House), and, in a summary of the French Foreign Legion response and rescue operation in 1978 in Kolwezi, Shaba Province, Zaire, there are clear photos of French Foreign Legion paras carrying, among other weapons, some G3 rifles. I had never seen this before, and was wondering if anyone has more info about this, and whether this was in any way common.

I can post some scans of photos, if desired. They appear to be standard iron-sighted G3's with slimline foregrips. Photos are attributed to elements of 2nd Foreign Legion Parachute regiment (2e REP - Regiment Etranger de Parachutistes).

I cannot provide any definitive information on that topic. But that is interesting. I have never seen any pics of French Foreign Legion members with G3s.

Here we go. These are cropped.

I'll attach the actual partial page images next.

I wasn't able to discern G3's in the other images, but there may be some. The primary guy carrying the G3 may be the same guy in both images.

I'd say that the G3 was a battle field pick up. If you notice the other two Legionnaires have their standard issue MAS 49/56s. I've never heard of the French ever issuing G3s to the Legion let alone at the same time as the 49/56. The idea of supplying two different calibers of ammo for the same unit would be a logistical pain in the ass, something I doubt the Legion would want to do.

That's certainly possible. No shortage of them in sub-Saharan Africa. They mostly still work, too.

Caption for first photo says: "Men of 2e REP collect their weapons after landing at Kolwezi..." It may be that he's had it for awhile.

Maybe he's an officer or senior NCO, and nobody is willing to tell him he can't carry it. I think the problem becomes that everyone will want one. I would.
