I am considering occasionally using my MKE Z5K as a concealed carry weapon (or, alternately, my B&T GHM9C), possibly under a trench coat or similar, weather permitting. Has anyone heard of a shoulder holster for this size weapon?? Possibly would have to function as a cross-draw. I am thinking maybe a one or two point sling and let the weapon just hang at my side. Ideas?
There were some all leather ones back in the day. There was one in the classifieds here not long ago. There are some currently made and surplus available. With and without mag carriers. Check in the saddlery there are 1 or 2 I think.
The one thing I would say as Negative Nancy is that if it seen by most people police will be called. Hell, I live in TN and I think it would still be a red flag. You may have an observant CWP holder, or an on duty, or off duty cop notice you and then it COULD go south. If I saw a flash of an SMG type weapon under a trench coat I would definitely call it in and be mentally preparing myself to shoot you. I know that's not an answer to your question... just saying. Too many shootings last few years. Hate for a misunderstanding to become a accidental deadly encounter.
meh do what you want and don't let others dissuade you, different strokes for different folks. Make up your own mind on if it works for YOU. There are a couple shoulder rigs out there but they are fairly rare and pricey.
Do what you like but I'd vote no. Too large, cumbersome, and it's gonna print like hell. I'll bet after awhile you'll just forget about carrying it. Never had the leather shoulder rig and all I could find was the nylon. Every fold in that damn thing chaffed like hell with a minimum of sweat. Extremely uncomfortable. Sold the rig for $10 more than I paid for it and never looked back. Was glad to slide the old leather jackass rig and my trusty 45 again. Yeah, it was that bad ...
Have you tried running defensive rounds (re:hollow points) through the firearm to ensure it functions first? That alone removed the MP5 as a truck gun candidate for me.
Not sure if this fits your needs, but I just wanted to show you this 5.11 bag option that we carry at work and they are fantastic! You can carry both subgun and handgun, plenty of room for mags and other stuff as well.
Interesting. Possibly overkill, but I am researching it. Again, carrying the HK or the B&T (both have telescoping braces) would be occasional, not everyday. Considering the zipper bag posted by "Stonewall 06", I think I could get away with wearing that bag (with the HK inside) exposed on my chest without other covering concealment. There are certain benefits to being 71 years old, I could run a clear plastic tube with breathing "buds" from the zipper bag strapped to my chest up to my nose, as if I have COPD and the zipper bag is just one of those oxygen providers. I could have a small velcro "oxygen" sign to put on the zipper bag. I don't think anyone would question it in a normal day of shopping. The very best way to hide something is to hide it in plain sight.
As others have said there are two shoulder holster choices - old (nearly antique at this point) leather rigs made by a British gent named Paul Evers, and the current production nylon ones. There is a good youtube video of a dude working with the current HK nylon one- the bloopers at the end highlight some of the difficulties in deployment.
I have one of the leather Evers rigs that I picked up (I think in the Saddlery) not long ago for use on the job. If you have to carry an MP5 concealed, it is definitely the way to do it the most comfortably and concealably (in my opinion). The leatherwork is true quality - basically art. He did lots of leather gear for the SAS in the 80s, so it's good stuff. But, they are hard to find and you will PAY for them. I cringe when I think about what I paid for mine - which I will likely sell when I rotate out of my current assignment.
Having carried an MP5K-PDW into harms way concealed using the holster noted above, I'll offer the following practical considerations that come to mind beyond the equipment:
1. Concealment- With the right shoulder holster and right wardrobe you can accomplish this. However, your motion will be very limited due to printing. If you stand/sit JUST RIGHT you wont print, but as you go about your business I promise you will. This will become even more true if you use a folding stock/brace option. It effectively doubles the width of the firearm when folded.
2. Speed vs. Capability- The principle advantage of an MP5K-type weapon concealed on your person is to be able to immediately apply SUBGUN firepower to what would likely otherwise be a pistol problem. I'm assuming (possibly wrongly, but I'll take the risk) that your Z5K does not have that most critical subgun feature, the "auto" selector position. So what you have is simply a large, bulky semi-automatic pistol. Unless you have the advantage of a stock/brace, in which case see item #1. This large, bulky pistol will be slower and more difficult to get into action than traditional handgun carried in a waistline holster. So while you're still fiddling inside your coat and getting the gun loose from your shoulder holster, the dude with the strong-side pistol across from/next to you will be putting lead on target. Without the auto switch, you're not getting much (if anything) for your sacrifice in speed.
3. If you decide that you'd still like to have the bigger hammer regardless of items #1 and #2, the off body idea submitted by Stonewall above is an excellent one. Any number of small bags will conceal a -K sized gun and you won't be hampered by the extra thickness of the stock/brace if you decide to go that route (and would actually get some benefit over a regular pistol). You'd have the options to carry a normal CCW gun, and then plus up with the -K in the bag if you are feeling froggy.
4. The public/LEO perception angle mentioned above. I won't bother repeating it, nor would I let it dictate my choice, but it is a valid concern worthy of careful consideration.
Just one man's experience, but it seemed germane to the question...
Unless the sub gun is full auto or at least NFA SBR or AOW it is just a bulky pistol imop ...I have holsters and rigs for a number of subs from the MP5 to MAC10 ...And unless you are thinking WW3 is about to happen I dont see the need for something like that be carried ..I mean if you think you are getting into a issue that needs that level of firepower I rather have one of the breifcases made for the MP5 then trying to pull the bloody thing out from under a coat ..
So yes it can be done ..Would I prob not ...Esp in a trench coat ...To me dude in trench coat esp in summer months with a sub gun said bad things are about to go down ..
Speaking from the LE standpoint, if I were still working and saw a guy in a trench coat with what appeared to be a subgun printing (and it would at some point, no question), you, I and a select few of my best friends might find an occasion to have a brief discussion on the matter. Might want to consider a USP 45 with extended mags instead... you might, just might, be able to keep that from printing under your trench coat. An effective, easily deployed handgun beats a visually impressive, unwieldy, hard to deploy, bulky wannabe subgun every time.
Well next time you see a guy with a MP5 under a trench coat let me know how you feel. My first thought is active shooter not carry permit holder. Whatever happens if LEO sees someone carrying an MP5 will largely depend on the experience of the LEO, and if said person is a 2nd amendment to the extreme idiot that is going to not comply and cause a stand off in the name of his constitutional rights.
Carry whatever you want, it's a mostly free country. I do think if you had a satchel or a back pack as mentioned above it's a non- issue. My opinion is a USP or P30 with some extra mags is a wiser choice based on the current state of affairs in our nation.
In the end it does more harm than good to responsible gun owners and especially carry permit holders. I have never known anyone to conceal an SMG type weapon that was not on a protective detail.
As for me I didn't say Id shoot him. Said I'd report it and prepare myself to if I had to. Once again if you've ever been in that situation, where you don't know who the guy is, what his intentions are, and why he has a VERY unconventional carry piece better safe than sorry.
