Default 50,000 Rounds in Six Months: The HK P30

(posted with the permission of the Mods)

pistol-training.com and Heckler & Koch USA have teamed up to perform a 50,000 round endurance test of the HK P30 LEM. The test will be officially announced on Saturday 2-May at noon on pistol-training.com, but we wanted to break the story early here.

    Obligatory first pic:

    Obligatory P30 questions:
    • Why is there red dust all over the inside of my gun?
    • Why doesn't the takedown lever come out like it's supposed to?
    • Is that a crack on the back of my frame?
    • My slide jumps forward on its own when I reload, is that normal?

On its first range trip, the gun devoured 1,000 rounds without any surprises. Initial accuracy was tested with 124gr +p Gold Dot resulting in an average of 1.92" out of five 5-shot groups fired from a bench. Follow-up accuracy testing will performed every 10,000 rounds using ammunition from the same lot.

My initial assessment of the pistol is much more positive than I expected. After using a striker-fired gun (S&W M&P9) rather heavily over the past eighteen months, I assumed it would take at least a few weeks to acclimate to the trigger and bore axis of the P30. To my happy surprise, the gun was very easy to shoot, even at speed. Muzzle rise was non-existent even with +p ammunition. I was easily getting 0.20 or better splits after learning the trigger reset.

For those familiar with the F.A.S.T. drill, I tried it once tonight and scored a 5.59 (clean). I had to do the draw from my waistband because it will be another few days before I have holsters to go along with the test.

I will be hunting down whichever sadomasochistic engineer at HK designed that ridiculous trough in the trigger guard, however. One thousand rounds in about three hours is enough to get blood seeping from your skin.

A weekly update will be published at pistol-training.com every Thursday ("P30 Thursday"). We'll also post major update information in this thread.

Some more photos that will be going up on the site as time goes by:

How often will you be cleaning it?
Could you take some before and after shots of internal wear?
After it's done, with such high mileage, will you be selling it for dirt cheap? :p
    Thx.

    Very cool.

I feel like I must speak up for the trough, though. It's there to make sure gloves don't get stuck underneath the trigger when it's being pulled. That gun is an extremely well designed one, which is what made me love a design firm like HK to begin with. Over-engineering at its best.

It'll be cool to see the results.

That said... any summer employment opportunities? :D

I'm sorry, I have sunk to this.

Definitely not for the first 2,000 rounds, for what we call the "2,000 Round Challenge" which actually started on another very small forum years ago. After that, I'm not sure. It will depend on the gun. When it starts to give off those "I'm going to malfunction soon" signals, it will get cleaned.

Could you take some before and after shots of internal wear?
    That's the plan.

After it's done, with such high mileage, will you be selling it for dirt cheap?
I'm sure I'll keep it, just as I did the previous gun tested this way.

I'll remember that the next time my fingers are bleeding.

And dammit, I forgot to put my new tag line in the first post:
