If you've submitting a form X to the ATF, and you have the cosmetic blemish in addition to wanting to have it replaced... I'd suggest calling the ATF and explaining there is a "recall" and to please amend the form. I don't see why they wouldn't amend the form, especially if it is still in the queue...
As for those that have already engraved, etc... you could ask HK if they can swap the barrel, or whatever, and if they can transfer the engraving ( I'm sure they have someone that can engrave )... But, since it is "cosmetic" there shouldn't be an issue... I'd only ship it back if I shot with a suppressor and gas was shooting out, although carbon buildup would likely seal the hole... or if it was to be a safe-only weapon ( I shoot all of my guns when I can.. I have, unfortunately due to health issues, been unable to take my G36 conversion out yet, or my M1 Super 90 Pre-ban in mint-condition )..
I'm curious, what deadline??
My MKE doesn't look like the Op's......................wouldn't be acceptable to me.
HK addict in constant search for a cure.
I'm afeared to look at mine.
I went through some trouble for mine too (then I got lucky!).
Also bought and burned 1000+ rounds breaking it in.
Sighted dead on from the factory and running like butter (after the first few hundred rounds).
I was thinking I'd just keep mine even with the hole.
Fortunately I don't need to make that choice
With any luck you won't either.

Mine has the hole... I checked with a fine needle
I will probably send mine back as it cost me a compact used car
