    Default My first HK!

Just picked up my first HK, a 9mm P30L V1.

I had a Glock 19 and this just fits so much better in my hand I knew I had to have it! Esp after hearing/reading how reliable HK is and having problems with my 19.

Is there a strategy for determining which grip panels you use? Or is it just by feel?
I tried to search for an answer and probably just missed it.

Also, is Breakthrough Clean good to use for cleaning/lube? I know people use mpro 7 but I couldn't find any so I would have to order it.

Somebody mentioned the wall drill with different size grip panels.

    Welcome to the forum.

FWIW, here's my previous post on Grip sizing.

That may be with trigger finger on the pad, or sunk further to the distal phalange. Obviously this depends on your hand size and finger length.

    I would suggest two approaches:

    1

Dry Practice: Using your hand size as a guide, select all Grip modules to match (e.g. Glove size medium, put the mediums on). Leave the retaining pin out.

Follow safe dry practice guidelines, and perform "wall drill" trigger presses, ensuring the sight does not move. Grip hard. No, harder than that.

Tip: wear a AAA headlamp and / or +1 diopter safety glasses to enhance your ability to clearly see the front sight.

Experiment, and choose a grip size combo that minimizes front sight movement.

    2

Live Fire: Assemble the selected Grip panels, and repeat the drill, live fire. Watch for front sight movement. Re-evaluate the grips installed based on results. This may require several shooting sessions.

As a metric, shooting 'The Test' (10 rounds at 10 yards in 10 seconds) on an NRA B8 target will help to give you a score. You are looking for all 10 rounds in the black.

Tip: sometimes going +1 size on the support side Grip panel can help 'fill the gap' for your support side palm, so as to provide more surface area for recoil control.

The end result should be a grip backstrap and side panel choice tailored 'for you' and your particular anthropometry, based on minimum sight movement and objective shooting results.

remove pin, try all three different backstraps while closing your eyes and trying to hold the gun with the sights lined up
open your eyes and see where your natural point of aim is
use the backstrap that allows you to get a natural point of aim with your eyes closed
adjust the side straps so that your trigger finger hits the trigger in the middle of the pad
fine tune at range with pin out, then when finished, put in the pin

How the gun feels in the hand doesn't necessarily translate into how it feels during live fire.
I loved how my P30 felt the way it shipped and didn't even try the other options for months.
When I did, under live fire, I could really feel the difference.
Went all large all around first.
Later settled on large backstrap and small side panels.
Shoot it, try the various options and find your own way...

As for cleaning/lube I use Ballistol on all my Hks - including my treasured SP5K.

BTW My P30SK has thousands of rounds down the pipe, including JHPs, with ZERO FTF/FTE/FTRTB (or Brace to Face).
I do run 124/147 gr ammo...

Welcome to the World of Hk!

The P30L is a fine firearm. You will appreciate it, especially coming from the dark side. Welcome to the wonderful world of HK.
