All HK handguns in 9mm and .45cal are rated to +P. No need to sweat that load. Shoot what you want for any purpose. I just won't shoot 115 gr in 9mm at all.
In 9mm, if you want ever so slightly lower recoil, us 147 gr, although I have yet to see that in FMJ for target high volume shooting. Some members of the shooting team used 147 gr in their P30Ls a few years ago to aid in target reacquisition.

Personally, I've always been partial to over engineered and tough as nails pistols. I'm also stubbornly old school. While both are truly great pistols, my choice is USP, every day and twice on Sunday. It's a beast of a pistol.

Not to drift this to far, but could someone post a few photos of a USP compared to a G17? I handled one in a store and it feels like it's the perfect spot between a G17 and G19.

According to the P series manual +P is fine for P30. However, some +P like Hornady Critical Duty 135g is not ideal for short barrel handgun. "Although designed to work flawlessly in ALL handguns, these loads are NOT optimized for short barreled, concealed carry style handguns".

I vote for P30 for sharing mags. I wouldn't mind add a USP to the stable, but am perfectly happy with the VP9/P30 line.

USP. Better grip, light years better trigger.

    AND....it's a USP.

I agree with most of the above info, lots of good advice. Both have their pros and cons. In 9mm, I very slightly prefer the P30 platform. Though the USP definitely has a better trigger, triggers can be modified, and there are other things about the P30 that I personally prefer.

I own both, but generally speaking, my personal preference is:
    - P30L & VP9 for general-use/concealed carry 9mm (can also share mags with USP Compact/P2000/P30SK/P2000SK/VP9SK - this is a big plus)
    - USP 9 Compact for deeper concealment (with flat floor plates)
    - USP 9 Expert for a range toy (I intend to also eventually add a P7M8)

    - USP 45 for general-use/concealed carry 45 (I definitely prefer this gun to the HK45 series)
    - Mark 23 for suppressed pistol/range toy/SHTF/TEOTWAWKI/feeling like a total badass

Ergonomics is a completely subjective thing, I much prefer the more square, flat sided grip of the USP over the P30.

    USP series for me too.

The Compact grip fits my hand better, but I've also owned the full-size USP9/USP45/USP45 Tactical without problem too.
