Default I found my "sleep number" today on my VP/P30....

What's your "sleep number" (homage to the bed commercials) LOL -

I had all the Small panels on my P30L, and was cleaning my new VP9 Tactical this morning with my coffee while my wife and pups were sleeping (peace in the morning with Ballistol and coffee and silence, but I digress) - I thought there was something off about the grip between the all Small and all Medium that my P30L came with out of the box.

The grip on the VP felt "good" with all Medium, but the slight hump annoyed me, so I did a quick swap to the Small backstrap and kept the Medium side panels in place, PERFECT! I changed my P30L to this setup too and now I'm definitely a happy camper.

VP is ready for the range, now just waiting on my TRS pliers to convert my P30L to 4.1CH, and my 4 magazines from HK -

This was my set up for a while also. But I recently found that switching to the large panel on the right is even better for me. I'm right handed.

Good idea. Never thought of using different sizes for the side panels.

I use small back and large sides on VP. P30L I like medium back and large sides. VP still feels strange/small to me and I find the medium and large backs just strange. The medium back on the P30 is perfect with medium or large sides. P30 is better grip for me and I much prefer the texture.

in the world of adjustable backstraps, etc. I realized that what felt best for me initially didn't necessarily shoot best for me. Typically a larger backstrap, while it felt weird at first, shoots a lot better for me. I am now, of course, used to how it feels, but it was an interesting learning process at the range over the course of a few trips.

Where the trigger breaks is important to the equation. I can not use a S back on my P series pistols because the trigger breaks so far back. The VP ONLY feels good to ME with S back, L sides. The M back on the VP's makes them point like Glocks in my hands. The only thing I don't like about Glocks pretty much. The large backstraps are big enough over the M's to actually print more - IMO.

I came to the same conclusion as you. Initially I had the small blackstrap and alternated with the S/M side panels, as they felt the best. After trying the large all around, I found this to be the most controllable and shootable combo.

Finding whats right is all about playing around. I also found small backstrap + medium side panels the best fit for my hands.
