    Default Luminescent Sights

Just wondering if HK luminescent sights/the ones that glow when you hit them with a flashlight have a limited lifespan. How many years before they don’t glow anymore? Anyone have a set that is really old that still glow? Thx

Although I'm not sure of the life span. It is in fact " limited ".

Night sights dim because the radioactive Tritium (H3) in them has a half-life of around 13 1/2 years (after 13 1/2 years they are 1/2 as bright as new, after another 13 1/2 years they are 1/4 as bright as new, etc.).

Luminescent sights are chemical-based, so the florescent material in them never decays. The only way they dim is being physically rubbed off or coated with dirt.

in my humble opinion, totally useless as a concealed defensive handgun sight. They work really well during the day if open carried and exposed to light. But at night, or under a cover garment, I just don't get it.

Restrictions in some European countries on the use of radioactive materials = no Tritium. Luminescent paint is the (not great, but better than nothing) alternative.

I’m not a fan of tritium sights, they don’t glow big or bright enough at night and are horrible in the daytime.

The HK Luminous sights are the best of both worlds.

The stock sights are actually quite decent. Not sure if Seery has tried Mep TruDot, I think they're fine in daylight, and TFX Pros work in all conditions as well. How bright should tritium be in the dark as even nearing 60 I can see either Meps or TFX just fine in the dark?

A HK factory rep once told me that the luminous sights that come standard on some HK pistols will return a visible glow for 30 years. I like those sights very much. My old eyes see them very well in all lighting conditions. They are now my sights of choice.

Wow! 30 years is plenty long enough for me.

I actually really like the stock sights, they are better than most factory sights, cough Glock

I wish the rear sight had a ledge and was shaped like the Meprolight rear, that would really be a great design update IMO
