Default Mark 23 and +P penetrators / hard cast

Hi....considering carrying my MK23 as a sidearm while Elk hunting. Don't really want to plunk down cash for a 10mm (though the P220 Legend is tempting). Has anyone tried these +p Penetrators in their MK23 (or USP or HK 45 for that matter)?

.45 Super, either Buffalo Bore 230gr FMJ @1100fps or Underwood .45 Super.

GJM's USP45 Field Pistol thread on pistol-forum.com has a huge amount of information.

This. You'll be hard pressed to sling anything hotter from a Mark23. Best part is the gun will shoot that all day long with that beast of a recoil spring.

Back in the day I used to shoot Triton 45 super from stock USP45’s, no problem. So the MK23 will obviously not have any trouble either. I confirmed with HK at the time it was ok to shoot them in full size USP 45’s.

As was said, 10mm performance pretty much. 230 gr at 1100. 185 at 1300!

Glock on the other hand said not to shoot them. And turns out, they were right. 😬

Those run in the USP FS and HK45C. What also work, is the same bullet but in the Underwood 45 Super loading, which gives you a bit more velocity which might be helpful penetrating a grizzly’s skull.

A year or two ago I called HK CS and asked about .45 super out of a Mark 23, and they said no HK pistols are rated for .45 super.

That said, I've shot ~100 rounds of various Buffalo Bore .45 super out of mine and I can't detect any damage. 185 grain JHP to 255 grain hard cast. Very smoky, recoil is really not much more than regular .45. I'd say it feels about the same as my .45 shield.

I actually shot a few mags of 45 super from a USC with issues other than a POI shift.

I think I was shooting Buffalo Bore 230gr and they were shooting about 3" low at 15 yards compared to standard 45.
