Default Extremely Frustrated but at least Hk CS is Good (rant)

Background: I’ve been a Glock guy for over a decade. During that time, I never once had an issue with any of them - not one. Fast forward to roughly one month ago...

I purchased my first non-Glock pistol, an Hk VP9SK-B w/ night sights. I knew I had to have this gun after holding one a few months back and the grip and trigger sold me instantly. Well, several days ago I noticed that the magazine release just didn’t feel right. It wasn’t smooth, it didn’t release the magazine very cleanly, and it just didn’t feel like it always had. I woke up this morning, dropped the 15rd magazine out to insert my 10rd mag that I use for CC and the magazine just fell right out. I tried all four magazines I have and all four fell out. I broke the gun down, removed the magazine catch, and found that there was a slight amount of surface rust on it - the spring was also very “not-smooth” and was tough to depress. I cleaned the rust off and applied some oil to no avail. I finally called Hk and, after explaining everything to the customer service rep (including that the gun was roughly one month old with less than 150rds through it), he informed me that I would have to pay to ship it to them. The gun is essentially a lemon from their factory (well, one part inside the pistol is a lemon) and they want me to pay for part of the repair?! Needless to say, my venting got me no where but at the end of the call the gentleman surprised me by informing me that he would be sending me a prepaid Fed-Ex shipping label. I’m glad they are stepping up to the plate and taking care of something that they are responsible for.

I must admit I am pretty dismayed that my gun that was nearly 2x the cost of my previous gun choices has broken after only one trip to the range and a few dozen rounds while my Glocks - all of them - never once had a single issue over the decade+ that I shot and carried them. I understand a sub-par part may get past QC every now and then in a factory that produces a lot of parts though, so I am going to carry on and give Hk the benefit of the doubt. They do, after all, have their reputation for a reason. Thanks for letting me vent, I guess I’ll be carrying my Glocks again for the next week or so...

I’m very sorry to hear this. HK CS will take care of you. I bet if you talk to Tommy directly he’ll help you out on all the issues. I will say it’s VERY uncommon for an HK to have the issues your speaking of but with that said.....HK’s should only have paddle magazine releases. Therein ‘tis the problem.

Bummer. Everything made by men can break. I had to send a brand new Benelli back because it wasn't feeding. Shizer happens. The good news is that you bought from a company that you can count on to make it right.

Realistically any of the big name companies never gave me issues. Occasionally something will slip through and when it does most companies will send you a prepaid label standard at least within the first year, but remember even though your frustrated the car rep didn’t build the gun and is only there to help you so be polite it’ll make all the difference in the world.

HKCS has been good to deal with from my perspective. I understand if you expected a label and they did not offer it up right away.

Their turnaround time will impress you.

I agree, with everyone’s sentiment that the CS rep isn’t responsible for the part malfunctioning. That’s why I vented (politely) and then carried on respectfully after he informed me that it was simply their warranty policy. I told him I understood and I suspect that the fact that I was polite and respectful for the rest of the call, even after finding out that they wouldn’t be paying for the shipping to their facility, is directly related to his decision to offer me a free shipping label. I was impressed from the get-go that I got to speak to an English-speaking human after only pressing one button!

With all of that said, this get’s even more interesting. Just as mysterious as the malfunction started, it stopped. I was packaging the gun up and inserted one of the empty magazines (he asked that I include the 3 magazines that came with the gun) with no problem. I then loaded it back up, along with the other 3 magazines, and all 4 of them are inserting and dropping out just fine. I’m glad it is working properly but would still like for them to take a look at it so this doesn’t happen at the (God forbid) most inopportune time. Do you all suppose there is anything they can diagnose or help with despite the problem going away?

I debated for quite some time on getting one with paddle releases vs a button release and chose the button simply for similarity across all of my pistols. I didn’t want to add any potential for confusion during the most stressful situation of my life. I am slowly but surely wishing I had chosen one with the paddles the more I have this gun, though, if for no other reason than they simply make more sense and seem IMHO. They’re like the metric system or the 24hr clock; we don’t use them here in the U.S., despite them being better and more logical.

After having paddles I think that is a better way to go once you are use to it.

Once your pistol arrives there, you should hear from which ever gunsmith gets it to repair. They should ask you to tell them what was wrong and what you want to accomplish.

I did that recently with a USP Expert in 40 that had been converted to LEM. I had them convert it back to V1. VERY HAPPY with the job they did. They fixed it THAT DAY and had it back to me the next day. No charge for the return shipping. I PAID for the repair, because I did not want my Expert to be LEM.

Love the job they did. Can't say enough nice things about HK's CS. They have worked wonders. As did the gunsmith that replaced the parts that needed to be replaced to put it back to V1.
