Default Question for someone with an MP5SD

Can someone please tell me the inner diameter and length of the MP5 SD rubber handguard shown below? I have a wild idea to try to fit one around an AR-15 handguard for a suppressed 9mm SBR build but I need to know the dimensions of it first. Thanks!

Just took off my hand guard and it measures 7 1/8" long and 1 7/8" long. Good luck with your project. Hope you post it when complete.

Hmmmm. The round handguard I just got has a 1.970" outer diameter so it looks like the SD handguard would be a bit small. Let me ask you this... Does the SD handguard flex? If so, maybe it could fit around a 1.970" handguard.

Yes it flexes. It's stout, but flexible. There is a flange at the front and rear of the MP5-SD's barrel shroud that the handguard needs to be expanded and slid over. Do a quick Google image search for MP5-SD (or look up the SD build kit on HKParts.net) and you'll see what I'm talking about. I have a couple of these handguards and just verified that it'll stretch to that width. Keep in mind though that you're only stretching it at one point when stretching it wider and that is the bottom of the handguard so you no longer have a circular shape.

EDIT: I just tried sliding it over a Viking Tactics VTAC Alpha Rail and it does so with room to spare. I would suspect that it'd fit over a Troy Alpha Rail too, I have one somewhere but don't feel like looking for it.

Your idea has merit, you'll of course need to figure out a way to affix it to the handguard.

The interior of the hand guard is lined with a sheet of spring steel. I have an outside measurement of 2 1/8".

    Have fun.

The Apex gator grip handguard I'm planning on using has an OD of 1.970". Considering the 1.875" ID of the SD handguard, that leaves a 0.095" difference. Should be just enough of a size difference to hold it on there. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

It would fit and would be tight from the tension but the inside of the SD handguard is entirely of spring steel so you'd have metal-on-metal which means it would not be secure and would slide. There are a thousand ways to resolve that but keep that in mind. Cool looking handguard.

If you're going to buy an SD Handguard, before dropping the $149 that HKParts and HKSpecialist are asking, you should post a thread in the "Want to Buy parts" area and give it a few days. You'd be surprised how many people have these handguards lying around. The dream of an MP5-SD is strong but the reality is more expensive than many expect so they abandon project builds and have the parts lying around.

Bummer. Looks like you need 51 posts to create a thread in the Parts & Accessories For Sale forum.
