Assuming both have a heat shield what is a practical difference between using a slim versus wide handguard on an HK 91? What are the pluses and minuses of both?
The wide surrounds the trunnion, protecting your hand from that heat.
They feel different.
The slim is lighter.
The slim provides no where near the heat rejection of the wide, as things are simply too close together. Fire 3 mags rapidly through the rifle and you better be wearing a glove with a slim forearm, while the wide barely gets warm.
Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think.
Yes. I've always used the slim handguard with no problem. But as stated, if you want to do mag dumps...it will get hot.

Would you say there is an appreciable difference in heat protection between the wood and aluminum/polymer forends?
Standard > slim!!!
Wood will provide better heat management.
Other than making a sleek rifle into a club, the fat HG is fine.
I fix the radar you'all try to stay under...
