Putting a giant flashlight on a scope mount on top of the gun.

Swap the new Surefire forend for an old school one. I believe the older 628s have just a touch more clearance. You'd need to compare some pics and double check though.

The title is "What would the German solution to this be", NOt "what would the American solutions I this be". We Americans to make things heavy duty and keep things simple, while the Germans like to over engineer things. This is why America is known for pick up trucks and the Germans are o own for thier complicated cars. I truly think the Germans would do something more complicated like machine a new front end grip to hold the flash light lower. Just my opinion.

Here was the 1st thing the Germans tried.

The British way was to clamp a Maglight in there since the Hensoldt was so expensive.

I would use the giant 8lb. Hensoldt illuminator crosshair device as a first choice... I mean you can find C batteries at Walgreens at 2AM and it uses a landscape light bulb to boot.... but if not then the 628 offset mount suggested first. They are around.

SureFire made an offset light head to specifically address this issue. The eventual rise of railed forend solved the issue

Or you get a Steiner mp5 lighted forearm but they can be hard to find and costly when you do.

I think I saw one for sale here on pro not too long ago and Here's a link to one at optics planet.
