Default The Bob G28 Clone Build

2020 EDIT - i think the pictures aren't posting correctly.

    Here's an Album

Ah, the fun of project management! Welcome to my build.

As a car-guy I am used to trying to manage the process in which I have to "tighten a corset" on a build and I figured it could be a lot of fun with a gun as well. As a back story... I am a huge fan of crazy color (think SCAR/earthtone, not fluorescent/battleworn/etc) schemes and the G28 is a perfect example of a juxtaposition of colors that are so "ugly" that it's beautiful. Keep in mind that I have an art degree so I am obviously a weirdo! If you have seen the SBR AR15's and other guns (AR15's) I have built you will see that the G28 color scheme is a perfect representation of mismatched beauty.

Second backstory: I love my Mr762 but I never shoot it. As a competitive shooter and an AI owner my go-to will always be a bolt action 308 with a longer barrel if I am trying to get out far (accurately). The Mr762 just always sits in the safe. The G28 makeover is my attempt at changing the platform (to a definite DMR) and trying to re-ignite that love. Think "kinky bedroom activities to try and spark an old flame". I do love the gun, I just never shoot it. When I do shoot it I am satisfied. I just don't shoot it often.

I have seen others try to coat their MR762's in a G28 color pattern but "not having the text/rollmark" present would never be an option for me. I'm not saying that I am a purist. I'm simply saying that it would have been a no-go for me if I couldn't at least have the MR762 rollmark present (Let alone the G28).

So, I set out on a journey about 3 weeks ago to fulfill my lust for the G28 treatment.

    Here is a "before" picture:
Now, I believe I am giving up quality going from a Razor Gen2 to a Schmidt Bender but that is something I will have to live with in order to gain that authenticity. Yes, I am saying that the Vortex Razor Gen 2 has superior clarity, brightness, and contrast compared to the Schmidt Benders I have used (with Premier Heritage being the best I've ever seen/used)

And then... ordered this (still waiting export permission, fingers are crossed). Along with the scope package I have ordered the vertical grip, the bipod adapter, the selector switches, the port door cover, and the magazine bottom plate. The things I need to order (when in stock) are the winter trigger guard, and the rear flip site. Hopefully the scope attains permission and it all ships within the month of May.

Disassembly was a snap with the Geissele Barrel nut tool:

    Wiped the original markings.

Here you can see pics of the engravings. Deeper than the original roll marks so that it can be color-filled.
Also, the Shell Deflector was re-profiled to mimic that of the G28.

Very very nice. I have always wanted to build my own g28 clone and I would've done it the exact same way! Really excited to see where this goes

    Thanks for sharing

Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Are you going to have the lower re-anodized?

How did you fill the MR762 lettering and then reblack it? Is it reanodized?

It's the original black from HK. It's fresh from engraving. Still a lot to do. I'm coating the receivers (upper RAL, lower bronze), and then color-filling the engravings white. It will look just like a g28 when it's done.
