I just zoomed in on the newest pictures in the '90000 416s for France' thread and guess what - the french are getting 3 of these Gen2 magazines per rifle in bright yellow for blanks if I'm not mistaken. That would indicate they are indeed the newest (and official) model. Have a look:

The regular magazines are the standard metal type.

HK dumped translucent polymer mags. They worked fine and were durable when made exactly up to spec. But when something went even slightly wrong in production they were too fragile. There just was not enought safety margin. But when I got info that there will be no more translucent mags (at least for military sales) I also got info that HK has replacement in works. Looks like they realized that all this translucent part is overrated.

Since it most likely arises from the constrictions of AR15 magazine well design, I assume that the durability issue pertains specifically to the 30 round translucent polymer magazine for HK416/MR223/MR556 and not to the mechanical integrity of polymer itself. HK has a long-established reputation for overengineering, which is particularly evident with regard to HK417/MR308/MR762 magazine construction.

Not surprising, given that other makers have abandoned clear mags due to issues with durability. Will be interesting to see what price these come to market at if/when released, perhaps this will be one of the announcements at SHOT this year.

Of course. Translucent polymer works fine when you have enough feed lips thickness to work with (feed lips area is most crucial there, that is why Lancer circumvented that with steel add-on feed lips). In that case you can use polymer flexible enough not to brittle, while still if will maintain desired shape an will not flex too much. G36, HK417 or Beryl mags are good example of that.

Which one? The one I posted about initially? I have one for "collection" reasons, not really using it. Spoke to Larry about it last month, if i recall correctly he said something along the lines that its a gen for some special operations contract that ended up not getting procured. Overall its just a random black expensive magazine with hk on it and no other special features.

I used only old (translucent) ones w/o problems. Will see if I can get some new ones for T&E, when I will have any rifle to use them in.
