Who did your UMP Conversion for $3500, the UMC is $2500 alone unless you had one from way back. By the time I had everything and cost for Tommy Bostic to put it together it was like $5k IIRC.

    416 noob question...

Will a 416 upper fit on any standard AR lower?

Yes - it will work. Make sure the trigger is compatible with the HK416.

If I am going to buy (especially right now with some 416 prices at a 5 year low, I am buying the real thing for the Chrome Lined Bore alone. When the MIL starts using Melonite/SBN/FNC or some other barrel treatment, I might consider it then.. Call me crazy, I'll keep shooting CL Bores and you can buy all the Nitrated/Melonite/FNC and other bbl treatments you like..

Nope. I've never sold one at a loss.....ever. Caveat.....In my earlier, ignorant years, I overpaid for one....but I still have it, and it's in mint condition.

I would get a real 416 upper if you can (assuming it's authentic and in good condition).

I think the MR barrel is swagged, so cutting it down is not the most optimal (as I understand it).

I still have my AF uppers that were among the first available all those years ago....still remember the comments like "$3k for an upper? No upper is worth that".

That doesn't apply to HK unobtanium, Michael!

Buy the 416 upper to replace the MR556 uppers until HK releases the A3 models.

Unless HK plans to release SBR versions of the A3 to the general public, there is still much value in a factory SBR a la a 416 upper.

Recommend you go with the MR556 upper. Much better value for money.

If you have lots of $$$, by all means go for the HK416 upper.

There are threads on the difference between the MR556 and the HK416. Main differences are MR556 is semi only + non chrome lined.

Best of luck whichever route you decide to do down.
