YES! Finally!!! I figured out how to delete posts on deployment internet!!!! Man, that was an exercise for sure. Sometimes we're forced to figure out a way despite operational conditions/areas.

On a serious note it distresses me that people are not posting good info because of people causing problems. If those problems continue I think the board would be much better for the info than the problems. Get what I'm saying? Keep this on track gents.

    NF 4-16x42 ATACR - number 1 pick for a 16" 308 semi

Consolation: S&B Ultra Short, Kahles 3-18 looks promising, and while it has an oddball 36mm tube, the ZCO Zero Compromise (they will make a name for themselves...mark my words) has a 4-20x coming soon.

I think the 1-8x stuff on a 16"+ gas gun is a bit romanticized at this point. When it's the right tool for the job/location, it's dynamite...but when it isn't the right tool, it's a real bear. The 417/MR762 16" isn't the slimmest girl at the dance, might as well use a full-powered optic and see how far you can push it.

Regarding the mount, work backward. Don't buy by brand to start. Figure out what you need first and THEN figure out what companies have what you need. As I said, NF doesn't have a 0 MOA mount; Spuhr doesn't have an Ultra Short mount WITH cant (if you want/need it). Badger Ord hasn't had some of the mount heights I've needed for certain ring sizes. Certain Schmidt & Bender's will bottom out on some Spuhr's. Height, cantilever, are you using NV, etc.

There are very few true 1x scopes. Even among red dot 1x only scopes there's some form of distortion or magnification.

That being said my current "mid range" precision 5.56 uses a 1.5-5x20 (30mm rings) MK4 MR/T SPR scope. It's on a Mod Holland build and does pretty well, all things considered. I can take yotes out to 400 yards no problem with it.

    Thanks

I would get a Leupold Mk8 w/H27, it's the best reticle in 1-8x, glass is on par with S&B and it's built like a tank. I've had both the short dot and Leupold and the Leopold is a better scope. If S&B made a Horus I would have it. If I was to buy a S&B I would get the 1.5-8x with CQB reticle 34mm tube in Patone. NF ATACR 1-8x with ED glass looks good too.
Spuhr QDM (quick throw mount) in 1.35" will give you the best cheek weld and will still line with clip on night vision and thermal. 0 MOA, as the distances you're going to shoot with a 1-8 you should be good with the internal adjustment in the scope. Even my gun with a S&B 3-27x ultrashort I have a 0 MOA and I'm good out to 1K.
Larue mount, Spuhr or ERA TAC, had them all and they're all great. I don't care for any "soft mount" that rely on a spring tension to keep the optic seated. ADM is a perfect example, there's a cam lever that has a small safety lever that relies on a small spring to keep your thousand dollar optic zeroed or worst falling off your gun. I have an ADM mount on my brass catcher and the safety has failed several times and it's fallen off the gun. DON'T TRUST THEM!

    Here ya go, kiddies:

If you can afford to take the next step beyond an ATACR, here's your chance to get into the Ultra Short game at a decent price. And if ya don't like RAL, I know where you can get the Pantone for the same price...
