@dms16 - I am seeing this video in my head as we plan this.
Famous Last Words of Flounder in Dean Warmer's office - "Oh Boy This Is Great"
That country is really flat - much like where I grew up. The wind never bl00dy stopped howling (except at night).
That's why I love now living in the mountains...
I've tried to use SIG 550 (PE90) out to 800-900m with 20.7" barrel, and it really struggles.
But then I was limited to only using 62-69gn projectiles because of the 1-10" twist.
Maybe my 416 build (under construction) can do better...
Yeah, the wind is a real b!tch here, but that just means I get a lot of practice at it. Stay tuned...we're going to push some 77gr out of a 20" 1:7 and see how far I can go.
More that 30 years ago one of the gun rags wrote a story where they cut down a 12" 44mag revolver
First they shoot it over a chrono
They cut one inch off of it's length, then does another chrono
they keep cutting one inch off and repeating another chrono
until it gets down to about three inches
BASICALLY the pistol lost about 200 fps with the loss of every inch of barrel
Given this is a rifle, I would expect more loss of FPS with the 1"/2" loss of shorter barrels
THANKS FOR THIS INFO, very informative
There's a blog (Rifleshooter) that has done this with .223, 6.5CM, 308, 224 Valk, 300 win mag and more...
Yeah, I no longer 'keep up' with all the new hotness that is coming out of the gun industry.
That is why I still like reading what all you folks WHO DO keep up, and what it means in your application of it
Sigh... any day above ground is a good day
Re: "keeping up", there really isn't much new under the sun worth the hassle. I love hot, new s#it that is supposed to make my life easier but little has changed. The flashlights are brighter, the AR's shoot a little softer and pistol red dots are coming into the norm...that's about it. Case in point, I'm sitting here in a thread I made regarding a rifle/optic combo that was "cutting edge" in 2005. All the while I'm contemplating paying a premium for an unobtainium CA762SSAL/RE flash hider so I can finally get my XM3 build on...
So much for "hotness" LOL.
Initial testing of the 20" 416 has begun. So far, results are...
