Default My MR's first ever FTE

I was shooting some German surplus DM111 .308 ammo last week and had my first ever FTE with my MR. This was my first use of surplus ammo and it seemed to shoot hotter than previous commercial ammo I have used for 6+ years of ownership. I could really feel the BCG cycle with a thump, whereas I normally barely notice it cycling. The upper receiver was also much dirtier from powder residue then I have ever seen in the past with commercial ammo. I found the casing was partly extracted less than an inch. I did not see the cartridge rim was broken off and tried a few cycles of the charging handle. I ended up running a rod down the barrel to push the cartridge out. It was then that I saw the cartridge rim broke off. Was this soft brass or hotter loads that caused the extractor to break off the cartridge rim?

I found one review about that ammo on Youtube the same picture you show in your post is in the video check it out. Looks like that ammo is crap and causes a lot of problems in the video it shows three rounds with the same problem but not good ammo.

Thanks for the link Lakelandman. I thought I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone. That could have been me making that video with the exact same results. Although I guess I was lucky in that I fired approximately 140 rounds and only had one FTE. Now what to do with the other 860 rounds I have on hand? I do have bolt gun I can fire it in, but I was hoping that I had sourced cheap plinking ammo for my 762. Spend and learn.

looks like way overgassed and early attempt at extracting ripping that rim off, bad sign for sure
MEN is usually good stuff for rollers anyway........

Most of my FAL rifles have trouble with bending rims on foreign surplus Ball when extracting it. On the FAL I can set the vent on maximum, put in an extra-strength piston spring, and use a piston on the small side of diameter, and still bent rims. If I use USGI Lake City, seldom or never do I see a bent rim.

It is, I’ve got a case. But mine don’t look like that. They are copper jackets and the rims aren’t scored IIRC.

WHAT LOT were you shooting? This guy is shooting LOT 96B.

So are you shooting the same LOT 96B or a different lot. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I also have some of that ammo for my 91's and my Rem 700 308. So if that is what it is, so be it. Having said that, where did you get your case from?

    Thanks in advance
