    Marvin:

I just read this and wanted to ask your opinion as a barrel maker.

There is new patent for a spiral fluted barrel for the M4. Read the article in the link.

Their design creates more surface area for cooling. I wonder if an M4 could also create more airflow around the barrel by using the power of the recoil or blowback or something. The direct blowback gasses may be too hot, but perhaps it could pull fresh air from a Venturi effect or...?

The Lewis Machine gun has that big shroud around the finned barrel with the muzzle recessed so that when the round leaves the muzzle, it pulls air in back by the receiver and circulates it around the barrel fins. An interesting design from the early 1900s for trying to lighten it up vs. using a heavy water-filled jacket.

...or maybe they could just stop treating a carbine like a light machine gun...

Not sure I agree that the increased surface area is going to make a damn bit a difference. If you can toast an M4A1/Socom barrel, you'll probably toast this one too. Without overt cooling measures or a drastic change in metalurgy or a massive heat sink...it's just extra steps.

PS: Get rid of the freaking M203 step cut already!!!!

I don't understand why this patent has been issued seeing that this has already been patented and it is a commercial product
maybe because it is a design patent. this is not my area of expertise

but my opinion is that if you want sustained full auto fire a M4 is a poor choice.
