Default HK91 to G3.. TSC or TPM? Opinions wanted.

    Hello,

I've got an early SACO HK91 with a bit of finish wear that I'm looking to have converted to G3 specs. I've been looking at Smiths to send it to and I'm a little leery of doing so because of past experiences with expensive HK rifles going out to gunsmiths never to be seen again. My recent experiences with HKparts (Cards compromised) hasn't done anything to alleviate my concerns.. It's always H&K dealers that I seem to have a problem with!

Between TPM and TSC who would you send your HK91 to if you wanted it done right with a decent turn around?

Also in need of a smith to complete a UMP conversion for me. Looking at Tommy Built for the services. Is he GTG?

    Thanks!

There are other reputable smiths on this board.
G3 conversion is swapping the triple tree, adding a paddle mag release, blasting and refinishing the rifle. There are a few with good reps and decemt turn around. Just reach out and talk with them to see what their current wait lists are for that work.

For the UMP Tom is the way to go. The master of plastic.....

I had Mike at TSC do my 91 to G3 conversion, first rate work. But, he is local to me, so I may be biased.

TSC is the only way to go for a genuine H&K imo. You don’t pay him a dime until he’s finished with your gun, so no IGF situations. Mike is usually a 2-3 months for a turnaround in my experience, and is up front about his wait.
I just picked up a MP5K-PDW from TSC a few weeks ago and have a HK91 with him now for a G3K conversion.
TSC is seen as the best smith, and the resell value of their conversions reflects this. Between TSC and TPM, I find TSC’s remarks better looking.
I would recommend giving TSC a call, he prefers the phone to email and is extremely responsive and willing to talk through your build.

Tom Bostic is the best for a UMP. Hands down.

We are fortunate to have a number of capable HK smiths working for the community and I think you can get very good results from many of them. With that said, I have had TSC do all my work (they are semi-local when I am in VA) and have been extremely pleased with the results. It is an active and well-run shop that I have visited in person, and the owners (Mike and Tammy) have treated my family like it was their own when we have had occasion to visit them. Mike it a perfectionist (like several of the HK smiths) with a real passion for building top-quality guns. He is also very efficient in explaining your many options with HK work, and has guided me through the choices (threaded barrel? ambi sling attachments? marking choices?) so that I received a gun was 100 percent happy with down to every small detail.

TMP moved a bit of time ago and still has been in the dark and cannot get a hold of them. I would avoid them until they get their stuff together and start treating their paying customers a bit more respect and improve their build quality.

I agree with this. TSC for roller locks, Tom is going to be the best for plastic.

10-4 Thanks. I'll be giving TSC a call tomorrow and I've been in contact with Tommybuilt.

Wanted to avoid another IGF disaster.

Still need to gather up some UMP parts. I'd like to find a source for the stock block that isn't HKparts.net if I can. Got the stock from HK specialist for a good price.
