"HK416 variants are available with 10.4, 14.5, 16.5, and 20 inch (264, 368, 419, 508 mm)" barrels. pulled that from the H&K website.

I'm sure many of us have thought about buying a 416 upper. How would you know what barrel thickness your barrel would be ? Is there markings or " date codes " as I have read other post trying to find the answer.

Is there a barrel thickness to stay away from ? Lots of members complain about the mr556 barrel being to heavy, is the thickest barrel on the 416 ( 14.5 inch as a example ) compairable to the mr556 in weight ?

In my case, my 14.5" 416 barrel was 22.5mm thick behind the gas block and had the goofy grenade launcher cut out in front of it. The MR's is 25mm, lacks the cut out, and is longer. So, the answer is no.

My 416 barrel is 0.875" behind the gas block (AF 2005 manufacture code). The MR barrel is a full INCH behind the gas block.

MR556/MR223 barrel is heaviest from the family (except 20" version of course, that is heavier because of length). Even M27 IAR has slightly lighter barrel.

according to my handy dandy calipers .875 inch is pretty close to equal to 22.5 mm at 22.22 mm. I don't have an MR556 to mic for ya.

Man, really appreciate you taking the time to do that Shamrox! Sound's like .875 is the spec. 22.22 is exactly 5/8, or .875. I'm reprofiling 3 x MR556, so just want to be sure I get the right spec before having some expensive barrels put on a CNC machine. 22.5mm is .8906"...not much difference from .875, but we all know how fractions of an inch can affect everything else. I wonder if the HK416 barrels are turned down here in the US like the MR556 barrels? Must be why they are not metric.

There are two different thicknesses on the 10.4" barrels. (Known in Hk circles as heavy/lightweight) Not sure what they are, I can get you the specs later this week when I have time to take them apart. I was thinking of this the other day and wanted to right them down anyways.

416 barrels are made in Germany, they're metric, and the heavy profile is 22.5mm behind the gas block.
