I’ve got a factory 416 upper that I would like to give a 171 prefix to for a C clone I’m doing. Is there a way or are there companies out there that can blast the current 88 prefix off and then mask off the whole receiver except for the bare spot where the 88 used to be , then reanodize the receiver and then laser etch the 171 in? I really want to save the factory applied proof marks just under the pic rail. I called one well known company and they said they can only strip entire receiver to bare metal then reanodize and add all markings back. They said ghosting might be an issue.

Might be best to find a blank upper and have what you want engraved on it. Those markings can be duplicated by a competent business.
