How do the grooves on the bolt carrier work as a forward assist?

I know thats what they are, but I can't figure out how to engage them (short of a #2 standard screwdriver and a hammer)!

You engage them with your thumb.
Forward assist

Thanks for the information.

I guess I'm kinda suprised that thumb pressure would exert enough force to push the rollers into locking.

I'm gonna start working my right thumb out!
This reminds me of the joke about the fly in the beer

Ok blitz. Some of us may not be ancient. Care to elaborate?

I am guessing something about buying something on the cheap, and then complaining about the flaws. (Spit it out, spit it out..)

I wouldn't... if the round doesn't go home on it's own, Ah'd be jackin' it out and checking out why. The guns are tough, but it'll blow like a grenade if there's a squib round a quatah inch or two up the pipe... preventing the bolt from locking up. And if you somehow manage to push that bolt home with a second bullet in the barrel... you might get a nasty surprise.

The fly in the beeah? What... no charge? ... and I'm old...
