I have a 70's Saco import HK91, noticed the ridge for the scope bumper is milled off on the early models. Can these still be used with an HK scope mount?

Here's a picture of a 76 import. Notice the ridge for the scope bumper is milled off....

Though this is just one example from Buddy Hinton's collection, I don't see any difference. Pics of the area that you're referring to will help.

The rifle in this auction has seen its fair share of HK scope mount use.

Unless you're seeing something that I'm missing, it looks just like any other 91.

Are you referring to the area pictured below; the rear sight base? My 91's & 93's look just like this.

The bumper from my understanding rides up against the steel ridge in front of the drum. The early ones don't have this ridge- it's milled flat. I have one Saco import and an 80's import with the ridge. Just noticed the difference tonight and figured the bumper would lay up against the drum itself on the early model. Wanted to see if anyone was running one.

yes you can, actually that rear mount is correct for a G3(and the optics and mounts were made for G3's not 91's), if you use the HK claw mount/Hensoldt(as some come) you normally have to remove the rubber bumper to use on a 91/3/4/etc

other mounts may(I dunno) made to 91 not G3 specs

My mistake; the picture I linked above is from a G3. Mine look like this:

It is a little taller and I never noticed that the SACO imports had the lower base like the G3. I have to remove the plastic insert in order to place an HK claw mount on my rifles. If yours looks like the base in my previous post, you can place the mount and leave the plastic insert in place. Thanks for posting, like I said, I never noticed the difference with the earlier imports.

Whenever we shipped out a claw lock mount from Chantilly, the packing folks would pull the rubber bumpers off the mounts and send them to Customer Service. In 5 years there, CS never had a request for one of those bumpers.

So basically the 70's import HK91's are closer to the G3 specs in terms of the sights. I just noticed the difference on my two and thought maybe something was wrong. Thanks guys for the clarification.

You will be ok using an original german mount, which are the best and well worth the money...
