Just got my converted SL8-1 back from Chopstix Kid yesterday and I must say that I am impressed. This thing looks beautiful. It started as an SL8 that I bought back in 1999 with the intention of converting to the AR magwell. I first converted it as a full size G36E type using SW conversion stock and magwell kits. I always really enjoyed shooting it eventhough the cheek weld was awkward with the dual optic. I thought I was finished working on it but then I started seeing the conversions done by Chopstix Kid and Tbostic and decided I may want to take the next step. I always like my guns to be short carbines so I decided I wanted it to be a G36K conversion with the permanently attached long hider to make the barrel 16". The workmanship on the receiver is incredible and the remarking came out looking better than I imagined it could. His attention to detail is second to none.

There's no telling how much money I have spent on this gun overall since I have basically totally converted it twice but I am very happy with it now and it was worth it. It feels like a completely different gun and I can not wait to get out and shoot it. The cheek weld is great now with the receiver put together just like a G36. I took some pics to share. I apologize for the poor quality pics but hopefully you guys can still see what it looks like overall. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with these conversions.

Looks great! What are you using for the compliance parts, if you don't mind me asking? The only thing that stopped me from going the K barrel with long flash hider route is the fact that I would have had to give up my US piston (which is the same as the SL8/G36E, not the shorter K piston), and I didn't have something else that I wanted to use as a replacement compliance part. Also, where did you get the flash hider and who attached it? TIA.

AWESOME.

I've got an SL8 on the way. I need me one of these conversions.

Just noting that the receiver is painted and it's a little darker than the factory finish tends to be. How much of that is the camera and how much of that is apparent in person?

I have it set up so I can SBR it later but the current US parts are:
1. bolt head
2. trigger
3. sear (only until I SBR or get a US HG or buttstock)
4. Floor plate
5. Follower
6. Piston (had it modified to work on K)
7. Flash hider

You can always get a Knight's rail and/or Ed's US mags that count as 3 parts or a SW buttstock to change out a few US parts.

I got the flash hider from Adam Webber and Chopstix cleaned up the lines a little by correcting the bevel on the end to be more like a real G36K. He also re-parked it.

The finish on the receiver is slightly more matte than the German parts but I think it will wear in and look perfect once the paint is not as fresh. The pictures may exagerrate it a bit. Overall it looks very nice.

My cost was in line with Chopstix's thread here:

It was well worth it in my opnion.

overall barrel length

Very impressive. I have been eyeing the K barrels and that extended flash hider on HK Parts but wasn't sure if it would be enough to reach the 16 inch mark when put together (no SBRs in my neck of the woods). What is the overall length of the barrel with the extended flash hider?

The hider spun all the way down was actualy just under 16" so I had to back it off a bit and his barrel is around 16-1/8"

Alumahyde Finish

FYI: For those that asked about the finish color. I wiped the receiver down with a Silicone gun cloth today to take some of the freshly painted dullness off of it and it matches the HK plastic near perfectly now.

Nice looking! I have a "K" coming from Joe as well but will have to wait until I get the SBR back to "construct" it.

Some people bad mouth silicone cloths but I love them. I buy one every time I go to Walmart (maybe once every 6 months or so). You just have to throw them away when they get contaminated.

Nice job, Joe, can't wait for mine!

Ohhh man, now I'm gonna have to spend more money to get my full 36 conversion done by chopstix and worse - be without my G36K!!! Why did you post those sweet pics.j/k

I looked into the K siterail also, but decided on the c siterail with an Eotech instead - would love to hear what you think about the K rail. Is it a 1X or 2x?

I have been carrying this thing around the house fondling it and I got to thinking. This thing looks so good that I wonder if you could have trouble with a range officer or someone else if you are out shooting it (or transporting it) and they think you have a LEO G36? You guys realize the the serial number is in the wrong place for a G36 (right place for an SL8), the bolt is a semi-only, and the trigger plack only goes to "one bullet" but your standard range guy, etc probably will not know that much detail. What would you carry with you to calm someone down if they get worked up thinking you have an LEO gun? First off, I would certainly leave or try not to go to a range where there is such a "nosey" officer but even so, it is probably worth thinking about in advance. I guess I could carry around the old rear section of the receiver where the KK date stamp plate and the HK horn emblem are. What do you guys think?
