We're testing the waters with offering bare receivers. Crawl-Walk-Run approach by offering base receivers first, then adding in trunion, mag release, barrel and complete uppers later.

EDIT 5/18/22: Now available with trunion and receiver top rail options.

Just a suggestion, when selling bare/not assembled recievers to customers, place a mark somewhere on it as a record of how it left your shop. Manufacturers of different firearms in the past who started selling bare recievers had people later confuse home builders messes with in house manufacturing and it hurt their reputations as a builder. Make sure either different serial number font or a specific mark that down the road if someone creates an abomination of a build you can say, "see that?, that was a homebuild" (and more importantly people in the know would be able to say, "no, see that there, thats not a Dakota build"

Edit: maybe a prefix on the serial number like BR for bare reciever, and BT bare with trunnion.

Agree. When PTR used to sell bare receivers, they had a different serial number prefix to denote that. It was a smart move.

I do believe that is what the H in D54H is for - homebuilt/homebuild/hell/handcrafted/etc.

As noted above, the model number is suffixed with the letter H to indicate Homebrew, or Hausbrew. We are just testing the waters at this point, trying to stay cognitive of the possibilities that poorly build guns may reflect back on us. The driver for this is primarily parts pricing. It is growing increasingly difficult to keep costs down. With the D54H, we are exploring the idea of finishing them with customer supplied parts as well--an option that many of our customers expressed interest in.

Is the claw mount area machined and tested to fit an HK claw mount properly?

Website description says no because they recommend that machining be done after all welding is complete.
I think selling these "H" models is a great idea. However, I share the same concerns as others above have noted which is how to identify one of these out in the wild. As the owner of a D54N and D54SD I know first hand that everything said about Dakota Tactical is true in regards to fit, finish and function and what comes out of the shop is amazing. I don't know exactly how many quality control checks are preformed to get there are done but it must be allot. That said, it would not be good for someone unsuspecting to pay a premium for a DT that isn't a DT factory build. I like the idea about changing the model number but think the serial number should also indicate how it left the shop and have some sort of suffix. Model numbers can be changed by someone after the fact but serial numbers cannot (legally) be changed as far as I know. Again, I think selling these unfinished receivers unfinished is great, especially for someone whose capability to roll there own is not the best or maybe they don't want to mess with that part. I just think a positive way of identifying these is important.

Just my 2 C.

When you sell receivers, there's a large door that opens into a world of questions and questionables. We've come up with some ideas that will help mitigate confusion but ultimately, it is unavoidable and defeatable. Here at just a few step we are taking...

1) Receivers marked D54H
2) Serial numbers have a D54H specific prefix
3) Major components that we install (trunnions, barrels, cocking tubes etc) will have our logo engraved inconspicuously
4) Receivers sent back at a later time for complete build out will carry our secondary maker's mark.

Now all of this is fine and dandy, but if you're looking at ****-show of a build on one of our receivers and unaware of the any of the above, well, it looks bad for us. But there is always going to be that risk as any of the above items can be defeated/duplicated. Over the last 13 years, I have received better than a handful of calls from the ATF wanting to do a serial trace on guns that have our model number and say "Dakota Tactical Canton MI" on them but are not our guns as evident by the serial number.

The roller-lock market is evolving. Evolution comes with risk. No one should expect that it will not be challenging for the providers. Cheers, Joe.

Possible solution… You could create/maintain a searchable serial number / model database on you website.
