few questions on a g3 sniper clone build on ptr/ msg91 New to forum

Im new to the forum and have forever wanted a g3 pattern rifle - I have finally decided to get one and for the past few weeks been doing alot of research including searching this forum and have a few questions. I have never owned and am pretty unfamiliar with the platform though just as a little background i have put together other firearms for my use on 1911, CZ75, Browning HP, AK47, and Ar15 platforms.

I am interested in building/buying a semi auto long range/sniper system on this platform. I would like to be around $2-2500 (starting other upgrades can be added later down the road) not including optics.

I was wondering how well the ptr msg91 and msg91ss faired out of the box. These seem like a pretty good gun out of the box and from what I have read the ptr msg91 should be with the right ammo an moa gun and have heard the msg91SS is capable of 1/2 moa. my only big concern with these is they seem to be a 1 in 12 twist and i would prefer a 1 in 10 as I run 190 and 200 grn smk in my Sako sniper system and would like to be able to use the same bullets (though i dont know if this is possible)and finding a bullet that would work in the 160-180 weight really wouldn't be that big of a deal i just think with a 1 in 10 you have a wider option range as it will shoot the lighter grains just fine but gives you the heavier options for better 800-1000 yard shooting

So my other question was should i try and find a ptr GI and build it (trigger work, psr stock, new hand guards) as i think those have 1/10 barrels

Or buy a base ptr and throw one of the hk parts extended trunnion and psg1 barrels in it - the barrels are just pressed and pinned in correct? is it something that is easy to change? press out the pin bang the set out and then bang a new one in? or is it a gunsmith only thing - i have not been able to find any videos on barrel removing/fitting?

or should I be looking at something completely different
Any help would be great - thanks guys

No body has any experince with a ptr msg91 out of the box?
Out of the box?
I wanted to make mine the as capable as I could, before I went to the range. I'd had M1a Super Matches, and though very accurate, not my choice for comfort. So, I took the "basic" PTR MSG-91, and added what I wanted- Harris HBRMS 6-9" bipod, Leupold 2.5-8x36 Mark 4 MR/T 30mm Riflescope, ATN PS22-3A, back-up optic of Trijicon TriPower, GripPod GPS-02, Insight Technologies MX3 w/remote switch, 3 X91 50rd drums, 160 20rd magazines, three complete spare parts kits, fabric/net brass catcher, PWS FSC30 compensating flash hider, Blackhawk SAW Sling, and Prvi Partizan 7.62X51 175gr Match FMJBT ammo. The people at PTR, HKParts.net, Scorpion Arms were/are fantastic. They were patient, and answered all of my questions.

My rifle is, for me, a tack driver. 4" groups at 300yds. No doubt there are many that shoot better. I'm convinced that others could probably shoot my rifle even better- I'm not as good as I used to be, and this rifle has never had any issues, of any kind. I got it because I wanted the most durable, reliable, and accurate rifle, for the price, that I could acquire. I got it from CDNN Investments, off the Internet, and could not be happier. With the PWS FSC30, it has 40% less recoil than a rifle with standard flash hider. The 1 in 10" twist is the same as on my dedicated bolt action rifles that are good to 1,100yds. I limit myself to 180gr for the drums and most magazines, but the Match for "serious social difficulties- of an important kind..." I have complete confidence in my rifle, day or night.

I was so impressed with it, that I purchased a PTR 32-KFR for my car gun. It is set-up nearly the same, but its primary optic is a Trijicon ACOG 4x32, ARMY Rifle Combat Optic for the M150 w/ TA51 Mount, also with a Trijicon TriPower for backup... It too has the same weapon light, GripPod, sling, bipod, brass catcher, and PWS FSC47. Parts are 90% compatible between the MSG-91 and 32-KFR. Best of all possible worlds! The 32-KFR loves the Hornady 123gr SST ammo, and is also a tack driver...

If you haven't gotten your PTR MSG-91, think real hard, how difficult it would be, for the price, to equal it's quality, it's accuracy, and it's reliability... I'd never switch back to SA's M1a Super Matches, or any other battle rifle, UNLESS, it would be an H&K 417, or its sniper variant, with all the bells and whistles...

So, is the PTR MSG-91 a sweet shooting rifle? Ayup, you bet! I also shot it, bare bones, before cleaning... Man, I love the sights! Much better than the M1a! I'm a fan!

+1 to what OLDPALADIN said.Hey OLDPALADIN,how do you like the leupold 8x tactical that you have? I have been looking at the 2.5-8x36 also. Mildot reticle ,correct?
Out of the box the trigger sucked so I bought an msg90 trigger pack. That was before I knew of bill springfields trigger jobs. Mine shoots sub moa with 155gr nosler hpbt and floats right around moa with 168gr fed gold match smk. Ill have to try loading some 168gr smk. the rifling is a 1:12 I thought all of them were except the gi model. But other than trigger my rifle is fact. It took me about three or four range trips to really get used to the rifle. I love it the magpul stock on it is great. Its a very comfortable rifle to shoot not bad on recoil at all with standard fh , but i always read about how great the pws fsc30 is so I picked one up. Haven't been back to the range to try it out yet. I measured up some steel 20rd mags and they seem to be right around 2.850 so unless the 190 and 200 grs arnt picky how far off the rifling they are they might be a little long. I haven't tried shooting anything heavier than the 168s but can't imagine them doing any good in a 1:12 anyways.
My only complaint about is the first time i took it out after I cleaned it the bolt gap was .018 and then when it hit the 250 rd mark the bolt gap was .011 and seems to be holding there. Im going to pick up some +2 rollers and maybe a pof bolt too. Overall I love the rifle I just wish there was a way to put a port buffer on it so i can save some more brass.

Why such a drop in Bolt gap,man that sucks.I bet it drives tacks though. try an HK locking piece first. A german contract bolt head may bring gap up alot more with a factory NEW LP.I have 2 POF bolt heads that run flawless.
My new, post AW837x MSG is great. I haven't done a ton of group shooting with it yet, as I already have an F with a PSR and Leupy 2.5-8x36 MR/T illuminated TMR that is sub MOA with Hdy AMAX 168. I've only got about 300rds through the MSG, but it's nearly MOA with SA ball. I beat the heck out of an 8" plate at the 500yd line last Saturday with the MSG from a bipod with just a Leupy 1.5-5 MR/T. Bolt gap started at .013(5) and hasn't dropped at all in 300 rds. I don't really need 2 precision PTRs, so now that I'm sure the bolt gap isn't going anywhere, I'll send it to Ghillie for a paddle. I already did the trigger. I'll probably leave it with the smaller optic, as it's lighter than the F since it has the K front end and fluted barrel.

If you're getting the Leupy, get the TMR reticle. It's a much more useful reticle than mil dots.
Tcr39 Ill try the Hk LP or do you think I should just go ahead with the bolt and new LP? It is a tack driver the rifle really is great cant complain at all.

I personally will not use the u.s. bolt parts in my weapons. I have 2 pof bolts,1 HK and 1 FMP and they all have held bolt gap in conjunction with they,re mated trunions.. I use HK locking piece in one of my rifles that had lower gap then I liked. I have found .012 to .018 to be the sweet spot for gap. Just my exp.Just keep an eye on it,it woudn,t hurt to have some back up +2/+4 rollers and some EURO bolt parts, they are drying up quick LATELY.
I've had no trouble with us bolt parts...at all, however, I have an HK bolt head for each of the guns that have them in my parts box...just in case.
