Some recent pics:

This is a member of the recently created Timorese police special forces. The H&K33 comes from Malaysia.

Nepal received at last their H&K G36! Note theu use the INSAS rifle too. The pics were taken this same week in the troubled country. Nepalese armed forces are fighting against maoist guerrillas.

I guess this is the reason so many 33 parts and kits
have recently hit the market.

How many did they buy? How did they get the German export ministry to allow the deal they opposed for several years?

What happened to the 45,000 Colt M16A2s they planned to buy (after the original 5,000 acquired in 2003)? Contract cancelled?

Cheers

Hans, this is the most recent info I´ve found about your questions:

http://www.iansa.org/regions/europe/documents/undermining_security/basic_flaws.htm

"In May 2002 after a long delay, the German government formally refused to issue an export licence for the export of H&K G36 rifles to Nepal, after Amnesty International's German Section had raised concerns about the possible impact of such a transfer on human rights in Nepal. It would appear that the long delay allowed another EU member state, the UK, to issue an export licence for similar weapons before the German government's formal refusal, thus avoiding the need to initiate the EU code undercutting process."

"500 US rifles for RNA arrive"

A fresh consignment of 500 sophisticated rifles [M16A2] delivered by the United States to the Royal Nepal Army (RNA) arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday, a report said Wednesday.

A special cargo plane Sunday landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport with those sophisticated weapons, according to The Himalayan Times.

"Forty mini-trucks were used to transport the weapons, ammunition and other military equipment from the airport to the place-concerned," the report said, quoting "airport sources".

The delivery, the report said, is a part of a bilateral deal hammered out between the then Sher Bahadur Deuba government and the US government in 2002. "It is the third consignment of M16A2 rifles that the US has delivered to Nepal."

In January 2003, the US had delivered 3,000 similar rifles and again another few hundred were delivered later, the report said, adding, "As part of the deal, the US had agreed to provide 5,000 M16 rifles in military aid to fight the Maoists."

Note the word "sophisticated". Considering that a great amount of nepalese security forces were armed until recent times with bolt action rifles and shotguns, an M16A2 is a very "soiphisticated" weapon then... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: H&K in East Timor and Nepal

It makes sense that the UK issued the export licence - the UK have their Gurkhas to consider. The Gurkhas are incredible soldiers with a strong code of honour, but it is a shame that despite the bravery and professionalism that they've shown around the world, their country is torn apart by civil war.

Yippieh ayeah: the Maoist rebels got their own G36 in time before effectively winning the war - so the fame of Heckler & Koch spreads to all sides, from Royalists to Maoists, EXCELLENT!!! Just don't care about export restrictions and EU code of conduct, they are ridunculously worthless anyways (see also Georgian G36s). Ch-ch-check this out:
