You can use the bobbed; it just isn't as handy for manually cocking to single action. It can still be done but harder to grab it. Realistically you only need to do this if the gun is loaded, and you decocked it to DA and then changed your mind and want to go back to SA. So probably in real use not that handy.

Or for dry fire, you can easily cock the hammer without racking the slide.

I haven't switched to bobbed yet but it doesn't seem like I would lose much.
